So, my big (42ft) cruiser/racer yacht is sold...

Looking ahead, I'm after something dirt cheap (£6K or less), about 22-26ft, with an impressive turn of speed. I need just enough accommodation for minimalist weekending, and ideally I'd prefer not to put up with an outboard.

What do you recommend?

Well we have real problems racing against a Laser SB3 that they allow ( I dont understand why, either) into our cruiser racing fleet.

Anderson 22

Or the almost identical Hunter 701.Both nimble but seaworthy Oliver Lee designs usually (not allways)with outboards though.

One of these maybe?

Well my Feeling 720 is very fast and as you know, you would be very welcome to come and sail her as soon as she is back in the water, but she is for sale at a little more than the prescribed budget.

I suspect the same would be true of the Benneteau and Dehler mentioned above.

The problem is the inboard engine. Most smaller boats built for speed have oatboards in wells.

Just how fast do you want to go? If you are prepared to go a bit older in terms of build then the GK24 is a great design and you are practical enough to get one back up to scratch.

That said you know, if I was in the market on those grounds I'd go for a Snotta. Come and have a beer and a catch up old chap and I'll put you in touch with some sonata experts.

22foot - fast with an inboard

very intersted to see what you end up buying

Please post the result of your researches

one other thing....

what is so good about fast anyway?

2 years from the Iow to Suffolk - now thats what I call fast

Had a Trapper 300 as a first boat many years ago and loved it to bits ,great fun with good a large interior for a 26 footer and also had a very good owners assoc but that may or may not be still going. There were a lot about and thet even had there own class in Cowes week at one time .What was your previous 42?

Very interesting replies so far - thanks!

The 42 footer was a Benny First, a fabulous comfy and very fast yacht. Speed is important because I simply can't bear the thought of going half as quicky as I did in the First.

That said, most of the suggestions above exceed my budget, though they're food for thought... Most interstingly, I'm quite taken by the trimaran, as it would be useable on rivers with the mast down... Now, a half shhare in one would be a definite option. Must do some more homework.

(If anyone has half or a third of anything of interest, at my budget, and either south coast or east coast south of Great Yarmouth, please PM me).

Hunter Formula One
First Class 8
Bolero
J24 (scruffy one)

They all fly, plane off the wind, have 'minimalist' accomodation for weekending and usually have outboards. They should also be in budget (-ish).

Hunter 707 - faster than just about any boat with a cabin mentioned so far.

I used to race one and used it for weekending. 4 berths, sitting room only and bucket and chuck it as a toilet. Does have an outboard, but lives in the cockpit and is the best outboard arrangement I've seen on any boat. Should be able to get one in price range as well.

As for how fast, I've had 16.5knots out of one, but that was with a full race crew.
