I can't believe the number of BIG BIG barges going up river today (past Medmenham at least), I hope they aren't all going to the ATYC Rally!
There has been a significant increase in the sales of the Replica Dutch Barges over the past few years. Rarely used to see them on the Thames when we had ours about 15 years ago. Saw loads on our recent 3 weeks upstream. Now have something far more modest and in keeping with the River.![]()
I believe that idea was shelved, after someone submitted a photograph of a dutch barge in a lock with a rowing eight... Both took up about the same amount of space, one was paying several hundred pounds per year, the other was paying less than thirty pounds!...
I think it was the ATYC & worries about Broom 37's.....
& what is more in keeping with the river?
It must be at least 50ft long,a minimum of 2000HP,extremely white, with a very elaborate and extensive collection of Radar and Sat TV aerials hidden in a mass of stainless scaffolding, registered in Nassau. Most of its surfaces including the "Williams" will be covered in neat blue canvas sun covers,it will never have been further than the nearest lock since it arrived courtesy of the six delivery crew .
Actually this not strictly true,it did go on the QJF as the owner knew somebody at the golf club who knew somebody at the lodge etc etc![]()
A Broom 30 of course![]()
We've been moored up for a week (with a licence) in our dutch barge, and have witnessed about a dozen big barges going upriver, all at a sedate speed, creating negligible wash unlike the plastic sea monsters belching clouds of black smoke and creating massive wash to damage the banks and wildlife. Each to their own!

+1.....and to hell with you 'Net curtain haters'....
Look, the river is big enough for all types of Broom 30, whatever the colour scheme, White, Gingerbread, Faded Blue or Avocado....and either one or two engines, flybridge or not.
I'm very easy going....![]()
