Bham Boat Show....A shame

Im not surprised, after talking to a dealer last week id say there will be a few gaps at excell if the climate stays as it is.

Talking to friends and acquaintances across a range of businesses recently, all seem to think we're heading for a further downturn. In any case, I think some companies are re-evaluating whether an exhibition is actually value for money in terms of bringing in real customers and whether other forms of marketing are more cost effective.

Interesting, we still seem to be very busy moving goods around, so someone must be buying stuff, is it just that the construction industry that is lagging behind ?
We do still seem to be getting lots of enquiries for driving jobs from that sector, but have had a few leave to go back to other fields that are picking up.

So what is going on ?...We have had suprisingly a good year and a chum who runs a dental laboratory has reported the same.
Mind you virtually all the little bits and pieces we need to buy,stationary/tape/ tools/nuts bolts and that sort of stuff we now purchase on line.
Some of the above,we used to source locally but the suppliers of our suppliers now flog online so we buy direct cutting out the middle mans profit.

Drifting the thread sideways to Excel for a moment does anyone know if there will be another show running at the same time?
i.e. Last January it was paired with the Outdoor Activities show.

Yes there will be, the Outdoor show (the other one) was supposed to run at Bham as well.

So to avoid confusion there will (unless I am told otherwise) be an outdoor show at Excel on one of the weekends which I think will be the last.

To drift again we will be by the Guinness bar (sorry black and white bar) with a huge stand featuring the crash test boat, so even if you are not a raggie its worth a look.

The every day essentials will always sell and my business deals with disposable paper products (bog rolls etc) We are moving lots of boxes but fro less money and profit and keeping our heads above the waterline.

IMO it's the big ticket purchases that are stagnating and will undoubtedly cause lots of grief to many businesses, and boats certainly come into that category. Only the well funded companies will survive.

Sounds like 'Caravan' exhibitors had kept it alive recently. One J Clarkson might not be displeased.

And equally they are the ones that killed it in the end by voting with their feet and attending the other one.

For boat builders (trail and inflatable) it was a cracking show, bigger stuff, perhaps not as it was fairly restrictive in what you could get in there.

I went a couple of times a few years ago, and not enough boaty stuff for me, so won't be grieving the loss. Looking forward to LIBS in Jan, as I missed SIBS this year.

IMO the doom and gloom mongers are in control of opinion at the moment. In my industry, IT, there is much more going on in terms of projects getting under way compared to even 6-9 months ago. Even when there is good news, as there has been this week with the GDP figures, all the so called experts say ahh yes, but just wait until the next quarter they'll be dreadful. Just what they said three months ago.... Notwithstanding the impact of a self-destriucting Euro, my fear is that the country will talk itself into a second recession.

Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that the big employers are suffering but the smaller folks are possibly holding up fairly well.
Little outfits like mine are always trading close to the line and can draw in our horns at very short notice,we are used to doing it all the time.
By the time the bigger outfits realise what is going on it requires major surgery to sort the situation.

Well yes the construction industry is certainly suffering at the moment but the people I'm referring to are in diverse industries including retail, travel, corporate training and marketing and all seem to be hurting. Having said that I've got a mate who runs a catering business and he reports that business is good. I guess we all have to eat. Boats and caravans are high value discretionary purchases and it's very easy for people to decide not to purchase such goods

Unfortunately the failure of this show is not just due to the economy but more to do with the internal politics of the caravan industry and number of shows
