As an electrical and electronics engineer, I always thought that I was especially sensitive to the smell of overheated insulation and electrical breakdown of materials, but I was taken by surprise yesterday. I'd noticed a smell of popcorn - exactly the same smell that you get in cinema foyers - on deck. We'd had kids on board the day before and I put it down to something they had left on deck - frankly I wasn't terribly worried or interested, I'd sort it later if the smell didn't go. Then without warning our electricity tripped, with a loud 'pop' on deck. I found that the 16A standard marina mains connector had melted internally and the connectors had touched. The inside was the consistency of a marshmallow and the smell was of popcorn. Yum! So if you smell popcorn, look at these plugs.

Now thats interesting. We could have fuses graded with different smells.
5 amp Christmas Pudding, 10 amp Fried Bacon, 15 amp Vindaloo, 25 amp Baby Poo.... etc etc. I have a 175 amp fuse on my inverter supply....what sort of smell should I have for that I wonder?
