So who patrols the Orwell?
Suffolk got rid of the Ian Jacob many years ago, so no official presence AFAIK. The Volunteer does patrol the river at weekends and has been known to advise or report speeding vessels, I did hear that they had the status of Special Constables but this may be incorrect?
I've actually been bollocked by the Volunteer for wake boarding behind my boat at about 5 knots. He said something like ' That looks really fun but you can't do it here..'
The Port of Felixstowe have been known to put their harbour patrol boat up river of the port where the river speed limit begins, especially on a Sunday afternoon when some boats are 'in a bit of a rush' to get back to base. I also heard a (possible) tale that the lock operators at Ipswich can be very unhelpful to a boat seeking to lock in if they have been observed blatantly speeding up the river. So who patrols the Orwell?
The latter is true, a few years ago a group of mobos went upriver at speed causing lots of wash, there were complaints to the Ipswich HM from yachtsmen and marinas. When they arrived at the lock they were refused entry. They said “but we have booked berths in Ipswich Haven” the lock responded “not my problem” they then asked where they should go. Anywhere not in this river was the answer! They were told firmly that none of Orwell marinas would accept them. The Port of Felixstowe have been known to put their harbour patrol boat up river of the port where the river speed limit begins, especially on a Sunday afternoon when some boats are 'in a bit of a rush' to get back to base.
