There was a story about a V2 on Mersea Flats doing the rounds in the late 60s/early70s. Part of the fuselage/engine/tail protruded above the mud, and the (then) landlord of Dog & Pheasant had taken a sledge hammer to it and taken some bits off. Bomb Disposal's demo charge didn't detonate the (one ton?) warhead, which is still down there - allegedly

V2s were silent killers until the bang being the first ballistic missile, you didn't see or hear them coming
