Beware potential big hole in mud

German V2 rocket found in Harwich Harbour

As Belgium seems to be the country of the moment on these fora , Sailorman probably faces more danger in Belgium than passing through Harwich Harbour .

England wasn’t the only target. “There were actually more V-2 rockets fired at Belgium than at England,” says Michael Neufeld, curator of the V-2 on view at the National Air and Space Museum and author of Von Braun: Dreamer of Space, Engineer of War.

There was a story about a V2 on Mersea Flats doing the rounds in the late 60s/early70s. Part of the fuselage/engine/tail protruded above the mud, and the (then) landlord of Dog & Pheasant had taken a sledge hammer to it and taken some bits off. Bomb Disposal's demo charge didn't detonate the (one ton?) warhead, which is still down there - allegedly :o

yup, my mum can still remember the sound they made when flying over from east to west heading for the uk...

nasty things as some times they just dropped down...

At the risk of being exposed as an unmitigated pedant, she'd have been talking about V1s

V2s were silent killers until the bang being the first ballistic missile, you didn't see or hear them coming
