Having posted on here that I have never been stopped by either French or UK customs for some 12 yrs they obviously thought they needed to do something about it!

So last Friday they waited some 10mls S of the Needles and 4 of them dressed up in black combat gear boarded me.

Very polite but difficult to establish their purpose. After my reply that only 2 persons on board one went below and then appeared to be told off in that he was to "secure" the ship and not start searching. I took this to mean to warn if the 50 or so illegal immigrants we had hidden in the cooker came out with knives to attack them.

Chief officer insisted that I inspected her ID card which gave me the impression that she was very proud of it as it Obviously came as a complete surprise to us that 4 people dressed in black otfits marked Customs, coming from a rib clearly marked customs and the accompaning large grey customs boat called "Searcher" was surprise surprise - Customs officers - whatever next - we will have policemen getting out of police patrol cars.

Took down our details, asked us for our ID, was really pleased that I had the original receipt for the boat even though as a charter boat I had claimed back the VAT! As a charter boat we have a file of all essential documents including Bill of Sale and certificate of conformity but I got the impression they were a little unsure of all the documentations relevance. I produced our log. They asked could they search the boat - which 1st man had started before being told off. No problems. Admitted I had 9 cases of wine on board - I had to have a seriously talk to my crew after as there were only 6 left and 2 cases of beer - very disappointing!

They took the time to explain that they would soon be part of homeland security.

Conclusions - a very polite bunch they livened up an otherwise boring trip. Not sure of their purpose though. They did seem to be questioning us and more interested in our responses (now what way do my eyes go when I am lying). Ultimately I suspect they were checking us for drugs (search was not thorough enough to discover any hidden - if we had been drug runners) and making sure that the alcohol was for personal consumption (they seemed more relaxed when we said no spirits as I never drink spirits and no cigarettes).

They then shot off after the next sailing boat some 2 mls S of us to liven us their day!.

At least it ensures that some people still have jobs in GB's Britain!

They've been hanging around the western entrance to The Solent since at least last year. We got stopped in July last year and had a very similar experience to you.

Funnily enough no sign of the customs boat on Saturday when it was blowing an E6...

Well it was out because we saw it go out in the morning and return to Poole in the evening!

We had the Searcher visit last year with the men (and woman) in black. The questions they asked us were all answered by our papers that they had in front of them, they were mostly checking to see if WE knew the answers I think. They gave us a postcard pic of the boat too with information about it and their role.

They were going up the harbour about 7pm as we sat in the cockpit eating our seared bass fillets with Jersey Royals, asparagus and new carrots, expertly cooked by me and washed down with a very nice chilled Muscadet. Sadly the bass wasn't caught by me but locally line caught by the man who supplies our fishmonger and delivered it just as we walked in the shop. But then we did have the cockpit canopy up over the weekend having decided it was a good one to relax on board doing a few chores and watching telly. Had a clear out of the lockers and found some wine we didn't know we had hidden away and a carton of French long life milk with a 2007 expiry date! East 6 and 11 degs C in the Channel, beware, this boat may contain nuts!

While sailing up the Costa Brava a few miles before the French border, with our big red ensign flapping behind us and our pretty big Spanish courtesy flag in the right place, we got followed for a good 5 minutes by a French helicopter at very low altitude pretty close to us. They had one of those expensive gyroscoped cameras on the front like the Sky news helicopter.

Then they disapeared. I was expecting a warship to appear and to be boarded by hundreds of marines.... but nothing.

I kind of felt disapointed.....

Got whacked within 5 mins of arriving on visitors pontoon by French chappie who lost control of his 15m Amel as he was docking ahead of us. Took out pulpit, anchor, bow roller and guard wires. Prob stuffed roller furling as well.

He reckoned that his prop failed....

Still we got a bottle of fizz from him plus agreement that his insurnace company would pay.

'Searcher' was anchored for a couple of days in the Scillies when we were there last and later 'followed' us (nobody else seemed to be out, anyway) for flippin ages - actually a bit of a nuisance as I didn't know whether he was going to come aboard or not and it made me very nervous having something that big quite near, off my port stern when I wanted to leave the cockpit in the hands of the erratic autohelm - eventually he went past, leaving us with his quite large wake to deal with! Not a happy man was I.

It's amazing really - there we have these regular assurances that Customs operations are "intelligence" led (don't know if that refers to the ability of the officers or the fact that some intelligence gathering organization has fed them some information upon which to act) and they spend their time driving up and down the Channel stopping people for no obvious cause. If a Police squad car were to scream to a halt across the front of you as you walked down the street and four heavies jumped out to search your shopping it would take us straight back to the operation of the old "Suss" laws. Who the hell are they kidding - the operation is designed to intimidate and nothing else - if they were doing a proper job you would be visited as soon as you docked and a proper search conducted. It's nothing but window dressing and a chance to drive up and down in fast boats and play at wannabe SAS/SBS.

A little note from the manufacturer saying that the boat conforms to various EEC regulations etc.

Presumably someone could ask to see it. Bit like a CE mark IIRC.

Vague idea you're not allowed to sell a new boat that hasn't got one.

Doubtless someone will now tell me I've got it hopelessly wrong, but at least it might answer your question. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That thought did cross my mind but then realised that I had no basis of determining any success rate they might have but while they were pleasant and polite I did wonder if they were jobworths!

Did look hard at their black soled combat boots and wondered if they would mark the deck- but decided they might tear the boat apart in their search if I asked them to remove their boots before comming on board!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
