Better idea for extra channel ferries.

Why do we need emergency extra ferry capacity if no-deal Brexit. Either the amount of freight will be the same or it will be less?

The idea is to spread the queues across the south coast, so that instead of having a thirty mile tailback at Dover you only have a ten mile tailback there and a few five mile tailbacks elsewhere.

It would be nice to see the Rosyth Zeebrugge route restored, and to see more utitlisastion of Newcastle too. They already have the hardware and customs in place. Indeed it would be good to see some service going north of Netherlands on the North Sea route. I wish the extra cash could be used on that, rather than given to Ramsgate.

I think there is only one active ro-ro berth at North Shields, and that's full of DFDS ship from 10am till 5pm. Customs are pretty marginal there too: on my last-but-one crossing I had to wait two hours for clearance. I now know that the trick is to arrive at either North Shields or IJmuiden as late as possible, so you go in with the HGVs after the car decks have been winched up and locked in place. I was third car off last time ...

Why did the ferries from NE England to Scandinavia stop running, was it just economic? Certainly a nuisance, it's a miserably long drive from Dunkerque.

Economics, I believe, and decline of the oil industry. We used to have Aberdeen - Norway (Bergen?) ferries, and the Lerwick to Bergen service has gone too.

There is no migrant crisis in the channel, the fishing boats being nicked from France are actually some guys desperately trying to get their hands on some vessels to make the ferry company they set up look legit :)

I reckon that they are the guys we need. Look how efficient they would be.
If a few people traffickers can get 200 immigrants to the UK on rubber dinghies, think how many Ro Ros they could get to the EU given a couple of 50,000 tonne ferries.
Hm Govt would not have to pay them anything, prices would be super cheap, because the return loads would be self financing:encouragement:
