Beta vs Vetus vs Yanmar - re-engine Moody 33

Beta seems to be the default option... Have a look on the MOA website - there is an article on there about re engining a 33.

Slight thread drift - can anyone point me to somewhere I can find a Beta/ Kubota equivalent parts list?

I think these people used to do replacement T90s http://www.thornycroftparts.co.uk/ for a fraction of the price of a modern diesel
I quite like my old Thornycroft - what happened to yours?

Cruddy white stuff coming out of the radiator cap meant salt water mixing with the fresh water meant cracked head gasket. When trying to drain the anti freeze it was so gummed up that nothing came out, even though the tank was full. A chat with the engineer confirmed that at the very least a whole new heat exchanger would be required, as well as a new head gasket, but the big worry was that water had got into the cylinders.

So it might not be terminal, but I had been preparing for a while to re-engine and this was sufficient prompt. So there will be a BMC 1.5 T90 for sale for a modest sum at Gosport from 29 April...

Graham - I'll call Thornycroft for a chat, and post with the resultant price for comparison. Thanks for the link to your article - very useful.

Why spend £7-8k on a diesel, when you can buy a brand new Tohatsu 30hp long shaft outboard for £2500, and a lifting heavy duty standby outboard mount for a couple of hundred.( called a jack mount)

Spend the £5k you've saved on champagne!

Might make sense for a 25/30 footer but are you really recommending it for a yacht of this size?

Diesels have more torque than petrol engines, but using the old rule of thumb of 4hp/ ton to reach hull speed, a modern efi 30 hp petrol should be more have enough guts to push a 33' sailboat against wind/ waves. Think of all the 25/30' sailboats that use the classic Tohatsu 10hp outboard sail-drive, extra- long-shaft.

Yamaha also make a high thrust 40. & 60 hp especially designed for displacement boats, so modern outboards have an answer to small diesels, and offer identical fuel consumption.

You can just throw an outboard onto the o/b mount, no plumbing necessary, 1/3 weight and 1/3 price.

If it was so good makes you wonder why everybody does not do it when actually nobody does! An inboard is far superior on a boat of this type which is why just about everybody fits one.

You beat me to it, o/bs are ok for the smaller yacht and plenty use them but for a bigger craft all that petrol plus storage of same just seems like an unnecessary pain. I speak as one who used to own a fishing vessel with a 40 hp and they are brutes, the thought of lugging one up and down the the transom of a yacht in any kind of weather doesn't appeal.

You can leave your outboard permanently attached to your transom on a lifting jack plate.

This video shows you how on a 350 hp OB, but they make ones for small engines too. You can order custom lift heights to suit your transom.

So you never need too take off the OB, and it's well clear of the water so causes no drag..........

I fitted a Beta 25 to my Moody 33 to replace the Thornycroft. I had to fit a new exhaust system complete with new water separator, muffler and gooseneck with the exhaust exiting out the transom and not under the boat - much easier to see water flowing. Also a high rise exhaust elbow as I was concerned that the exhaust elbow was about level with the waterline. One advantage of Beta was they will make the engine bearers to suit your existing bearers which saved having to make new bearers - just had to raise them a little which was easy. From memory this was the only supplier who offered this. Also check wether an oil pump is fitted and where is the water situated for easy impellor replacement. Service from Beta has been excellent. Contact me if you want more details

Your wires to the moon seem to be crossed

Whoops, sorry. I'll translate from American to English.

You can get transom lifts for your outboard custom made, any size any lift height. Just bolt onto your transom.
Push button to raise OB out Of water.............

As you already know the price it's possible to get the Beta for is much less than the RRP.

I'd second that, don't just accept the quoted price, talk to them directly (not via a fitter). Either knock the price down or, easier, find the additions you want (better control panel, uprated alternator, special feet, shallow sump etc) add them on and ask for the same quoted price.
If you've got the transport it's worth collecting from their works, saves delivery charge and you get a tour of their factory, quite interesting.

Despite it looking stupid on a 33ft Yacht the main reason not to fit any outboard on a boat this length is pitching in a big sea . If I had a quid for every over revved outboard that went through our Marine workshops with broken springs I'd be a rich man and thats on 25ft yachts Fine for get you home when wind dies but making headway into a big sea ,wind on nose Sorry don't work.

The current price on a Beta 30 is 5291 plus VAT plus carriage But Beta will give you at least 25% off that and be warned they are reviewing their prices at end of this month. Most of their dealers who I believe get 37% of will match the 25 from Beta some even more making their profit out of the fitting.

Outdrives/outboards seem to handle storm force conditions on pilot boats/ ribs without any problems, and the prop can be out of the water for considerable amounts of time.

If you fit a small OB close against the transom, it'll look fine. As you say, Fitting it hanging 2' off the back of the transom will look wrong.
