Beta v Adverc

I've just had installed a Beta 10 engine on my 27ft sailing boat (yayyyyy!). However I've just been informed that my adverc battery management system has not been attached to my alternator and that, to do so, the alternator needs to be stripped back and the adverc wires hard-wired (soldered) onto the brushes.

Has anyone any experience with a situation like this? Naturally I will call adverc and clarify, but it would be good to hear your opinions.

You would think that marine engines and battery management systems would at least try to accomodate one another no?

Sounds typical.
Here endeth the warranty for your new alternator?
Modifying the alternator is not difficult I have done a couple.

It's a very simple job to do,provided you can get easy access to the alternator,But assuming that there is a new alternator with the new engine,it would be better to phone Adverc and they will advise you how to do it.They are extremely helpful.

I don't think that I would expect an engine installer to connect up a third-party alternator controller unless specifically instructed. He might also need to consider whether the modification voided the manufacturer's guarantee on the alternator.

(1). Look at your alternator / contact Beta - to find out what make and model it is (there is a possibility that they fit different alternators from time to time.

(2). Phone Adverc and pass the information on. They are very nice and pleased to help. They'll email you with a diagram / photo and idiot instructions.

Alternatively send them the alternator and they'll do it for you - for a charge, but it's really quite easy for most units. Basically, you undo four bolts, remove the rear section, solder a wire to one of the brush connections, lead it to the outside and reassemble.

Easy, once you've got over the fear of fouling it up.

BTW, Adverc will also need the model / serial number of your existing module as sometimes that has to be modified as well.

There you go - chapter and verse.

As to your comments:-
(a). If you had told Beta in advance they might have modified the alternator for you.
(b). You're perfectly at liberty to buy a fancy already modified relabelled "marine" unit at several times the price, but if Beta did that up front you would probably run away to the competition 'cos their motor would be too expensive...

The smart advice is always on here. I trust no others. Thanks everyone, I do appreciate. You're right about the price thing - incidentally its a 40amp alternator that's fitted - but I should have had this all clarified beforehand. But then, I never thought this would be a challenge.

Iain....different makes of alternator require different modifications...but as we have all said,Adverc will tell you exactly how to do it..and will probably send a diagram .You will need to identify the make of alternator so that they can help. In my case,the boat was in Greece so I sent them a photo of the alternator which allowed the chap to identify it and send me the correct instructions. You can't go wrong.
