There's an option to fit a Shallow Sump on the Beta 14, which would then protrude down below the engine beds about 70mm less than the Standard one. Also the pick-up would be at the side rather than underneath. £108 extra.

Certainly the Shallow Sump variant will be easier to slide into place.

Any perspectives, apart from cost?

I got the shallow sump so that I could retain the under engine drip tray that was fitted to the boat. 10 or more years down the line I can't say it has made any difference to the operation of the engine.
If you buy the engine from Beta direct then I would say you have a good chance of bargaining the shallow sump into the price. Also try for the next better control panel or the bigger alternator. Ask for a price based on that spec then offer to order there and then if they'll do it for the standard price. Worked for me but, as I say, that was a while ago. They certainly have some wiggle room.

If you have room, go for a standard sump. You'll save £100. Only if the standard won't go in would I recommend the shallow one.

Ive got the shallow sump and am pleased that i can get my arm/hand under the engine to clean/repaint/find dropped items. I certainly couldn't with the std sump.
