The 17 year old starter motor on my Beta 622,( same as a B722) ,seems to have died. A replacement is £380; ouch. Since it's basically an industrial Kubota engine, I wonder if anyone knows of a a specialist supplier who might be sell the same thing at lower cost, but obviously, at this point of the year, time is of the essence.
Unfortunately, the label on my motor is so damaged, I can't read any manufacturer, type no. etc.
Any help appreciated

Take the "dead" starter motor to your local autelectrics/alternators & starters man and ask him to repair it. Much cheaper and almost always successful.

Bought a Yanmar one from them a while ago - next day delivery and a third of the marine price, give them a ring as they know their products if not sure of exactly which one to get..

Thanks for suggestions. The prices asked by agents for "marine" starters etc. really does seem out of line with other applications.
The good news is that now with the starter at home, a good clean of solenoid contacts, brushes, pinion etc has brought it back to life, so hopefully I can save my money for something else for the boat.

This chap is excellent.

In April we were bringing a Westerly Tiger, purchased in Falmouth, back to Woodbridge. The solenoid on our Volvo MD2B ceased working. Volvo at Queen Annes Battery took great delight in telling us the engine was very very old and you could not get the solenoid. They could not suggest anywhere that might be able to supply us with a substitute, even though this company was less than one mile away, and highly visible on a main road. These Volvo people are not mechanics, they are part-fitters. Previously the mechanic at Fowey was very unhelpfull and said he might have something but he was not sure when he would be back at his base.

In desperation I went to the local scrap yard, just next to the marina, and the owner sent me to this business.

The bloke looked at my solenoid, asked details of the engine and said that he had one suitable. It looked the business and at this stage I asked the price.

It will be £10, he said!! I would have paid £50-60 if necessary. The shop was stacked out with starters, alternators and similar items. A really decent bloke who knows his stuff. They will refurbish most starters, alternators etc.

Isn't it surprising that a boater from Yorkshire and one from Nottinghamshire both speak so highly of a company soo far away.
