Don't forget to fill the lips of the seal facing the water side with waterproof grease. The seals used to use phosphor bronze springs a long time ago but it seems that they're now ordinary metal which don't like sea water.
The seals on my Jonson pump fitted to an MD2B have just been replaced even though the oil side seal was 'as new'. All the problem was with the water side one. There was also some wear between the shaft and the drilled hole / bearing. Not wishing to buy a complete new pump, one of the club's engineers drilled it out oversize and resleeved it to get a snug fit. £15 well spent.
Now that's what I call tight wad boating ( with apologies to tightwad sailor if he's on line!)
