After 6 years my water pump is leaking. No problem says I,there's a new seal waiting in the spares locker. However when I take it apart it becomes apparent that the shaft suffers from a bad case of crevice corrosion. So there I go to the engineering shop first thing tomorrow to get a new one made and try and get the whole thing ready in time for launching day. There's something wrong with the design of these things,it shouldn't be necessary to replace the shaft along with the seals.

what make of pump

However they do fit Jabsco pumps to their engines, I know that because I had to replace an impeller that shreaded itself on Saturday, followed by dismantling the tube stack to remove the bits........

'Stainless steel is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in an oxygen depleted environment'

ie, under a rubber seal.

The above from my college notes 22yrs ago. Nothing has changed. Fit a new shaft.

At the first sign of leaking on the pump you should change the lip seals (22mm x 10mm x 7mm) because if the shaft rests in the water for any period you will get this corrosion.

Need to check periodically. This will happen with every marine engine using a standard sea-water pump, even a Nanni!! (Especially for Sailorman!)

Hi Steve

The problem is that I never noticed any leaking before. But there must have been some because there is discolouration around the drip hole.I'll be more careful in the future.

Pump maintenance on re-assembly

Don't forget to fill the lips of the seal facing the water side with waterproof grease. The seals used to use phosphor bronze springs a long time ago but it seems that they're now ordinary metal which don't like sea water.
The seals on my Jonson pump fitted to an MD2B have just been replaced even though the oil side seal was 'as new'. All the problem was with the water side one. There was also some wear between the shaft and the drilled hole / bearing. Not wishing to buy a complete new pump, one of the club's engineers drilled it out oversize and resleeved it to get a snug fit. £15 well spent.
Now that's what I call tight wad boating ( with apologies to tightwad sailor if he's on line!)
