Hi All. Bit of a long shot but I'm on the hunt for a Beta HE for a 1995 BD722. I've been onto Beta and they don't carry these anymore and on newer engines they have been modified. The Beta guys did suggest an upgrade using the newer HE but would need new alternator, Thermostat housing, alterations to pipe diameters, studs etc etc. The engine runs fine and no leaks from end caps at mo but was told at Fox's be unwise to remove them as corrosion around meaning may be problem after removal. Normally soak & flush with white vinegar and fill raw water system up with a/freeze for winter. So any suggestions as to where I might pick up one of these older HE or if anyone has one to get rid of for a fair price

I had to change the heat exchanger in my Beta 20 last year due to corrosion and that was only 7 years old despite doing the usual winterising. While it is recommended to clean the exchanger stack regularly, if you have an effective strainer and plenty of water is coming out of the exhaust it is possibly not necessary and the existing setup still has life in it. I somehow doubt a 30 year old replacement heat exchanger is going to last longer than the one you already have. If you want to go down the replacement route however perhaps ask Beta to put you in touch with owners who have recently bought replacement engines that might be able to supply the heat exchanger from their old engine or try the practical boat owner reader to reader forum.

Thx for the comment miles from the sea. Did you replace your HE with the newer version? Seems a bit of a faff soldering larger fittings and having to fit different alternator as new stack is longer. I will put out a request on pbo tho, may get lucky 😏 Other than that the old engine runs fine, no smoke no loss of fluids etc..
All the best

Mine was a straight swap as my engine is of the current spec. I did write a letter to ask the experts at PBO about my experience which was published in last month’s edition with their reply which you may find helpful. Perhaps get a second opinion on whether the heat exchanger actually needs to be changed - extract the stack and make a detailed inspection for corrosion?
Good luck

Seems sooner or later you have to grasp the mettle (when convenient rather than underway somewhere ) and dismantle your unit to discover if the corrosion affects the tubes or simply the caps .It may be possible to adapt one at least of these to a different sealing method or to engineer a replacement ?

Yes I realise it'll need sorting but be nice to get a second hand one to bolt straight on. Going the new HE route with all the additionals seems bit daft on and old engine (altho still runs sweetly)
