A friend of mine has a Beta 35 and recently found water in the oil. He removed the head and found no obvious problem. He is now scratching his head.
Has anyone suffered this before and, if so, where did the problem lie?

At this stage even speculation may help.

The Beta manual, under 'troubleshooting' lists:
- Core plug pushed out due to frozen block
- Water pump seal damaged
- Sea water entering exhaust manifold

No mention of cylinder head gasket. It seems a little premature for your friend to be removing the cylinder head unless he's already eliminated the above.

I perhaps should have said, he had to put a large amount of water in the cooling system. Which eliminates water in the exhaust and one of the water pumps.
I can't see it being frost damage but he now thinks it could be a core plug.
Do you know if there is a seal behind the cooling water pump?

Looks like a gear driven pump which means it will have a seals on the shaft to stop water going from the pump to the oil and oil getting past into the pump. Could be the source of water in the oil.

I hope I can add to the PBO database. The head was pressure tested and it was found to have a pinhole in one of three small (10mm) core plugs. This has been replaced and the oil replaced a couple of times.
Hopefully my mates season can continue without any more problems.
Many thanks to all who tried to help.
