Hello folks. I've been on board for the last couple of weeks, and have noticed a new issue with the gear selection on my boat.
When going from neutral to reverse for slowing up, there is no issue at any boat speed, the reverse gear engages straight away as normal. However, when I use reverse and go into forward gear to slow up, it doesn't engage, and the engine just revs up. It doesn't make a difference if I go straight into ahead or wait a few seconds. Cables, morse control and engine/gearbox have done 180 hours, and cables are adjusted correctly.
No issue at any other time other than going from reverse to ahead.
As I have a long fin keel I need to get a bit of speed up to be able to control the boat direction in reverse and its not nice reversing not knowing if or when the forward gear will kick in to stop her.
Is there a gear box sensor if the prop is turning the wrong way to not engage the gear?
The last time was a bit panicky I had to go from driving in reverse, into neutral, quickly engage reverse and then straight into ahead and she engaged as normal about 6 feet off 2 other boats on the pontoon.

Have you checked the control lever? Is it possible that sometimes the speed control cable is being moved but not the gear cable, as when starting the engine in neutral?

Also check the gearbox end as there is a little locking arm that holds the cable in place and has been known to lift off causing gear selection issues that caused me a sphincter tightening moment in a marina once!

Let me guess .... it's a Technodrive (Twin Disc) gearbox :(
