looks like i might need a new one - but bearing in mind that the 'marine' premium adds a large cost, does anyone know what the car spare part equivalent for these engines is?

40 amp standard or the 70 amp with the Micro V Belt?

Part Number is marked on there soemwhere!!!!!

It should be an Iskra unit.
If it the same part number it comes from a JCB, but there are some Citroen ones.

I believe there are several different alternators for the Beta 14. Your best bet is to get the model number off the alternator and go and ask an auto-electrics place.

First stop would be an auto electrician to get it checked and reconditioned. I have just had my Volvo one done for less than one third of the cost of a new one. Two days turnaround.

There are a couple of alternator rebuilders on ebay, they can give good advice and also alter the output and fit connections for sterlinh controllers at non marine prices

I agree that an auto electrical firm is your best bet.
Danbury Auto electrical 01245 225718 did a rewind for me for a fraction of the cost of a new one.[at least they said they did, may have just wiped it with an oily rag]. Also did it for the next day.
There is probably a firm in Burnham but I've not used them.

Danbury have a strong reputation. They did a starter motor for me.....

WFM.
I've taken both motorbike starters and boat alternators to my local car-sparky to be met with "That's off a $YEAR, $JAP_CAR_MODEL, yes, I've got a a recon in stock for $PRICE".

See if you can find your local Kubota agent and have a word with them. The 40 amp Alt. is a standard Kubota part.
