not being able to venture far this cruise managed a few days in the Plymouth area.
Visited the Saltash yacht club and felt looked after and welcomed.
What clubs make you feel welcomed or not?

Not Royal Southampton (in Ocean Village).

They were our hosts for a rally last summer. I was told off for using my mobile (there were signs in the bar saying no mobiles but, in the area I was using it, there was no sign to say you couldn't) and one of my crew was told off for talking too loudly!

OTOH the Royal Soton at Gins is v. nice.

Fond of Itchenor SC as well.

Especially when it's the venue for a Twister meet. :D

I also remember a wery conwiwial evening a few years ago at that yacht club in St Peter Port (the one upstairs that used to overlook the inner harbour but has now moved). We were storm-bound and had a sing-song led by a man from Ulster with a fine voice.

Offhand, I can't think of any of the many yacht clubs that I have visited being in any way unwelcoming. Even rather posh ones that you might expect would look askance at the un-pressed crew of a small boat (meaning un-pressed in the sense of un-ironed, rather than volunteer)

Don't think I've ever been to a yacht club as such, apart from as a soggy kid launching a dinghy at Emsworth. I've used the showers at Fowey Gallants and Salcombe, and am grateful to them, but have never been in the clubs themselves or spoken to any members.

I guess I don't really have a feel for how the visiting thing works and would feel a bit self-conscious. Nothing to do with them being posh or not, btw.

Greenwich. Ok, I was there as a member rather than a visitor, but a bloke I hadn't met before gave me a mast - that's what I call friendly.

how to use Salcombe Yacht Club

After having your shower [or even before if thirsty] go into the bar. Speak to the barman/woman and say " A pint of Doom Bar please". Receive beer, hand over money. Repeat as required.
Not really being facetious, nearly all yacht clubs are happy to see you and take your money. You dont have to be a member of another club or anything like that.
In theory to fullfill the licencing conditions you should be asked to sign in , but most dont even bother with that

You still have a lot to learn about this boating business, for clubs are usually quieter, and cheaper than other facilities ashore.
You should be a member of another club - that's written into their constitutions but often observed more in the breach.

I've never been in a club that wasn't welcoming, though I'm sure they exist!

The only time I was even challenged was when I went into one club (it wouldn't be fair to mention which one) and somebody told me I wasn't allowed in whilst wearing boots. I explained to him that I was just popping in to pay for the use of the pontoon and would then be on my way. His opposition faded and he even found somebody to take my money!

Second Royal Solent - before venturing in thought it a bit intimidating and that we might feel a bit 'out of place'. Far from it most welcoming and food good.

Royal Dorset at Weymouth likewise.

Royal Victoria at Wootton very friendly as is Bosham Sailing Club. Dried out at the quay once and Commodore appeared above us, welcomed us to use their facilities and invited us to join them that evening for a carvery.

Royal Channel Islands at St Helier, they made us feel we'd made their day by coming along, couldn't have been pleasanter.

(Excellent meal too! Better than we got in any St Helier restaurants)

Ditto. Guensey Yacht Club. Very friendly club. Very Jolly crowd always.
Now they have a new panoramic balcony, marvellous for dining al fresco.

Did once go to one (Royal Corinthian?) where they wouldn't let us in coz no ties. So one of us nipped back to the boat and brought along all the sail ties we had. That worked. I spent the evening advertising Hood.

Yes, The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. That's club life old boy. Reefers will be worn after 6 pm. But I found it charming. And if you are a member of another corresponding Royal Club the better. They have a couple of cabins available for members and guests to overnight on as well.;) My favourite is the one with French Doors on to the lawn.

The one in Guernsey is now someone's house. She looked confused when we walked in.

Had fabulous welcomes in most clubs (itchenor, lymington town, marchwood, royal Victoria, warsash, royal solent, royal Guernsey, royal gibraltar .....)

Only ever had problems at royal Thames. Was doing them a favour in return for dinner and got refused entry to the dining room.
