My new boat has the name painted on the small stern along with its Royal yacht club name .... but I’m going to be installing a self steering system which will partly obliterate the former and I have no plans to join the latter (both names were painted on by a sign-writer).

Any views on the best type of marine paint to apply over and any preparation hints ?

It’s a small pinched SHE 32C stern so Iits a small area, I don’t need a lot or require a super polished finish to match the rest of the hull.

Cheers

Painted graphics on gelcoat can usually be scraped off, sharp Stanley blade in a plastic holder, a light touch and just take a few mm. at a time. It will probably leave a shadow which can be polished out with wet and dry but it does not sound as if you may be that fussy.

If it has been painted on then very fine wet and dry will remove it and then compounding will restore any lost shine, you may have to do the whole transom if the exposed area is different in colour though?

Or use a paint stripper safe for GRP, eg Interstrip, Marine Strip, etc.

+1 A caustic soda based paint stripper such as Marine Strip is the way to go .......... Unless it's been painted on with a polyurethane paint, which is unlikely
