Try Sian Elins, up the stairs to the left of Salty's. Varied menu (definately not pub grub) and decent wine list. Best of all is the view across the marina, for those of us who like to feel better about some of our own mistakes!

Too late! Secret's out.

I need to take about 20 people for some decent grub in Yarmouth. How does this compare with The George's Brasserie? I've never been to either, but the Masterbuilder's at Beaulieu was really good, and I thought The George was owned by the same lot - obviously the chef can't shuttle between them.

Should be amusing watching us arrive, though.

You might need a 2nd mortgage at the George Brasserie and IMO the food doesn't match the price tag. We were there for our wedding anniversary last year, OK but no more than that and our bill came very close to £100 for 2 (with wine). I don't know where I would chose for a party of 20 as everywhere is normally so crowded at weekends especially. The food at the Kings Head is good (and inexpensive) but standing room only, the Bugle is mediocre too. It might be worth contacting the Yacht Club, they might well be able to put a meal on for you all as a visiting Rally?

Re: Fenders

We use Fenders regularly and have not been disappointed - early bookings are very necessary though.

Whatever you do avoid the Whatsheaf, its changed hands gone downhill and the food is now even worse than it was last year when the chef had left and the landlady was doing the cooking

The Wheatsheaf

Bit suprised to hear you say that. We ate there on Thursday evening and I thought the food was better than (f'rinstance) at the Bugle. Standard Pub fare, but SWMBO's fish was obviously fresh, and freshly cooked, and I had a decent enough curry.

I've had much worse.

Tried the Thai that used to be the Indian, took a party of three Thai colleagues. I thought it was good, good food, good value, good beer and a good laugh as the waiters all seem quite new and have yet to work out what there jobs are. My Thai friends gave it 7 out of 10

It did change hands last year, the same people that own the Anchor in Cowes now own it. As for the chef, he left when the old owners left.
I have heard mixed opinions regarding the food there, but generally always good ones.

yeah the view is good, but unfortunately i though the food a bit so-so. Worst is the sily whistle that the chef blows when some food is ready, which makes it all seem a bit amateur.

In common with most uk restaurants, under no circumstances will you ever think "I just don't know how they do this for the money!" as all restaurants (incl sian elins) charge the very highest possible price that they can get away with, rather than a price at which one might go back again and again.

all imho.

Agree re costs but I tend to put it down to the endless "hidden" costs in this country red tape, Health N Safety, inspectors etc etc. We spend an inordinate amount of time, effort and especially money enforcing all the rubbishy bits which other countries ignore

You are a very charitable chap anthony.

Restaurant wise, there are indeed various rules and regs, but these don't stipulate that the vegetablesmust be served in separate 70's dishes, nor that everything is a la carte instead of there being a "prix fixe" or "preferred" menu, nor that so-so chefs invariably offer a unbelievably large menu in a smallish restaurant and then take ages to make it all. Sian Elins does all of these, but isn't alone in doing so.

Re: Wheatchef

Having had an excellent 'pub' meal, attentive service and acceptable seating this Sunday I would be happy to recomend this pub.
It is a little different from the steaks and huge stilton ploughmans that I remember from before but it is significant;y better than many pubs I have eaten at.

Agreed tcm

Went there again Mon 6/9 and not quite so good and not cheap either.

Still the best view of others mishaps in the harbour though.

Anyone been to Salty's recently and prepared to comment?
