Best Type of Riveter

The little ones are good enough but as said can be a sod to squeeze, the lazy tongs are by far the best, but you have to be careful as when the rivet pops they have a tendency to jump about and the tip can hit whatever surface you are riveting, the long arm ones are quite frankly ****, only use they have is for setting the 1/4 dia rivets.....

Not sure what you base your opinion of long arms on?
As an apprentice i sometimes did tasks that required hundreds of pop rivets every day. We had lazy tongs and long arms both of good quality. For preference i used the long arms, but if someone else got them first i used the lazy tongs without complaint.
Prefer the wieldiness and control of long arms.
Not much in it but key point is whatever you get, get good quality.

I need to do some riveting on my dinghies and my research says that I should get either a long armed riveter or the lazy tongue type. However I can't find anything on why you would choose one over the other. Which one is likely to be the easiest, most reliable?

I imagine that a young, tanned riveter with huge biceps would be preferable to one with a lazy tongue. But long arms may be useful in difficult positions.

I prefer long arm as you can use them when working up the mast. I have a 20 year long arm that look type the 'faithful'. THey weren't cheap. The lazy type may be good on the ground but you do push yourself away. I also have a cheap pair of riveters for small rivets but the cordless drill adaptor mentioned seems good and if it would do 6mm monel even better - I would possibly buy it, even though I don't need it at present.

Another vote for Faithfull Long arm riveters.

I borrowed a pair of cheap Lazy Tongues, they were OK for aluminium rivets but were prone to score the work as the rivet popped and were impossible to use up the mast. When I tried them on big Monel rivets the jaws fractured. I had to buy Long Arm ones to finish the job and they are still going strong.

my fave set are long armed I brought em from a rivet making firm in london, They are perfect for lining up to be sure the rivet is square on the job. Then gentle pressure job done, you do need to control em to stop jumps as the pin snaps

Having done a lot of riveting, several thousand! I'd suggest an air riveter when you have lots to do, the electric drill one works very well & then the lazy tongs. I'd only use a lever setting tool when you just have a few to do. If the adjacent finish is critical then use masking tape & card to protect it.

If you've got a compressor nothing beats an air riveter for about £15.

Can I ask whether the rivet adaptor does monel and stainless rivets?

I found this video, which shows it is really easy to use, but I do wonder whether it has the power for stronger rivet material?
