Go for the Amazon 4.3 turbo diesel. Apart from the Toerag V10d it has the most torque which you need for towing. My mate bought my last one and its still like new [s reg] I think he has it up for sale at 11k. He bought a Tow Rag V10d but is not happy with the fuel cons. The deisel has more grunt than the V8 petrol.
I have towed a 2655 and a Fourwinns 268 with petrol and diesel Disco, Grand Cherokee and petrol landcruiser. Without doubt the best was the auto diesel discovery. Happily towed boats to Menorca (3000 miles round trip in temps of 35-40 degrees). I found even the V8 petrols didnt get close to the towing grunt of the oil burners.
Yes Defenders are rated to 4000kg but only with hydraulically operated brakes on the trailer , 3500kg with overrun brakes . Towed my old Bayliner to Scotland from South warks 2.6 tons 440 miles for hols , defender double cab chipped TD5 195 bhp no probs towing at 60-70mph . I regularly tow 3500 kg tipper trailer , the main thing rather than ballasting towcar is weight distribution on the trailer , plenty of noseweight for a good tow , lots of weight on the trailer rear = straight through the nearest hedgeback ! , by the way folks for a powerful pickup the Navara has a relatively poor towing capacity of 2.6 tonnes
Jeep Grand Cherokee could tow an elephant with a range rover strapped to it's back.
/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif RR over rated and over priced for what you get other than the badge and the depreciation which comes as a standard option /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sadly, the heap of American junk can only manage 3360kg, which is less than the Discovery.
Depreciation is a similar story, with the new Discovery 3 enjoying a familiar success story to the old Disco, although for once it has good reason to, having won more awards than any other car in history, and is still winning them four years after launch.
The Jeep is renowned for poor quality, poor dealers, poor resale, and relatively miserable off road performance.
The Range Rover depreciates due to it's high original price, and the fact Range Rover owners are defecting to the Disco 3.
But a Jeep would be near the bottom of my list fer sure... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Sure, to charge across the US deserts, plains of Africa & cross the Gibson I'd probably want the most rugged, proven & tank like machine there is, ie a landcruiser. For Englands green & pleasant land, with its meandering lanes & choked motorways go Disco 3. (I have one I have to add, tows 3 tons of Searay just fine). /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
A couple of years ago I would have gone for the Toyota, and still wouldn't turn one down. It's a very nice vehicle.
But after 6000 miles in a Discovery 3, I'm in love. It's everything all rolled into one. A genuinely refined luxury car, a serious off roader, probably the best in the world, a great towcar, and a practical family 7 seater tough enough to knock around in.
It's simply better than the rest, although the rest are frequently very good too.
But not the Jeep. Thats typical yank rubbish. The surprise is, the Yanks own Ford, Volvo, Land Rover, Mazda etc etc, but the Yank stuff itself is so deperately bad.
So I blame the Americans.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Apart from the very real stopping issue already mentioned, if the towing vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes you are limited to a width of 2.3 m and length of 7 m.
Your towing vehicle has to be 3.5 tonnes or over to take advantage of the 2.55 m width and 12 m length under Construction & Use Regulations.
We tow with a Lancruiser Colorado - 3.0 TD excellent tow car. Lock the diff and go into low ratio and I swear it could go up the side of a skyscraper. We towed from Cheltenham to Southampton and it was dificult to keep the speed down.
For length overhang:
"Marking of rear overhang:
Between 1 metre and 2 metres, ensure the end is clearly visible by attaching a piece of cloth or similar.
Between 2 metres and 3.05 metres, a marker board as defined in the regulations must be fitted and must be illuminated at night.
If the overhang exceeds 3.05 metres, the police must be notified before commencing the journey."
For width overhang:
"Loads must not project more than 305 mm either side of the trailer.
Loads over 2.9 metres in width are classed as abnormal loads, and the police must be notified before commencing a journey."
Have gone off the idea of an Amazon, it was just not a Land Rover, Have been offered a New Defender 110 2.4d XS Station wagon, Do you think that will tow the boat better than a Discovery 3. Becuase the 110 is classed as a commercial, becuase it can carry a tonne in the back, it does have Tax advantages over the Discovey.
PS Cant wait for the summer when i can start to tow the Boat!!
Isn't there a commercial version of the Disco if you're after the tax break ? I'd not want to change from a Discovery 3 to a Defender though I have to admit.
As appealling in a 'Rambo' way the Defender is, it won't tow as well.
The Disco (Apart from the basic one) has Air suspension, which is extremely (By luxury car standards, not 4X4 standards!) comfy and capable, the V6 Turbodiesel is very torquey and quiet, while the longer wheelbase helps stability.
The ABS, Traction control, Stability control etc adds to safety, which can't be bad. With the latest tax increases, I reckon used ones will be quite affordable at the mo...
Shame i bought mine six months ago /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
