Best Tow car for 3.5 Tonne Boat

AFAIK, the Disco, Amazon and Toerag all have towing capacities of 3500kg. Surprisingly, the Disco, being a total lardarse, is heavier than the other 2 but I agree with the others, the Amazon is a tank and I'd rather use one of those as a tow car than either of the other 2. Disco's got a weedy engine too

The Discovery 3 will tow 3500kg, mind you, it only weighs 2800kg. You might wish to take some passengers as ballast /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Thank you for all the replies, the only two options I am considering are the Discovery and the Amazon becuase I currently own the Discovery and I have been offered the Amazon as reasonable money.

I intended to tow the boat some distances, I plan at least one trip to the South Coast from Yorkshire in the summer and hopefully a trip to Loch Lomand as well. So I really am looking for the best tow car.

I have towed a similar sized boat with an old Range Rover Classic. Towing was fine, stopping was good. Trips up to 50 or 60 miles. Once on the road I hardly noticed the boat there. Just keep the speed down and leave lots of space in front as stopping distances are increased.

I think the discovery will be fine.

Not sure that is correct, I have a Defender 90 which I move the boat small distanece with but would not like to tow it any distant, they are not heavy enough in my option. Hence I think the Amazon is the way to go..

Hi Jez/Mike

SWMBO has an Amazon Landcruiser.
Its the second one we've owned.
Built like a brick ?hit house.
When I was working, we did lots of exhibitions and I often used our first one to tow the company's box trailers which we grossly overloaded.
I remember one day on the M4 wondering why the Landcruiser was having trouble going over 80mph - then I realised (I'd fogotten) it still had a 2.5 ton trailer on the back!!

Seriously though, we have often put a heavier load on the back than is legal and it has no trouble.

Having said that, now that we have moved to Devon, we are wondering if it isnt too big. During the winter months we can get down the steep narrow roads to the beaches and its a bit of an experience driving a big vehicle like that back up again but, really, its too big for us now but I'd still like to keep it.

Remember that the old landrover 90s pre when they were called defender all had 3.5ton towing capacity on a braked trailer. It didnt mean they could do it easily or fast.

It is interesting seeing what nautical and Hurricane are saying.

There is a massive difference in towing using a disco 2.5tdi and an Amazon, no comparison at all .

The Amazons are well built and a thumping great 4.2 diesel at nearly twice the HP.

I found MPG better as well.

An all up trailer is still a large load to two behind any 4wd and at 3.2 tonnes is near the limit.

The Disco 3 is around 200bhp (Diesel) and can be chipped to 230bhp, still less than the Jaguar the engine came out of!

Don't confuse the new Disco with the old one. It's in a different league, and makes even a Landcruiser seem agricultural.

last year I drove 10.000 km'ers with my 3.2ton, combination behind my Mercedes GL320CDI.
This is legally OK the car is allowed to tow 3.5 ton, and the behaviour of the air suspension is brilliant.
The powerfull engine (220HP) and automatic 7way gearbox make this combination perfect for me.

I would have thought the Disco was ideal.
I have a Disco 2 with superchipped TDI and tows a Monterey 250CR which comes out at 3.3 tons on the trailer.
OK, won't beat a Ka off the line and needs a foot full on anytyhing a bit sloping, but tows at 60 on the flat.
Towed from Swindon to Alacante, via Santander with two stops in Spain and at 18.5 to a gallon.
