Which "over-the-hob" thingy would you recommend? I have tried this sort of things but it rusted itself out of existence, and this contraption which is, quite frankly, [--word removed--].

Any improvements, short of buying a cooker with incorporated grill? (donations welcome!)

Was your "contraption" the more expensive stainless one? I have had more success with that than the pyramid one. The other type is a permanent 2 slice tent shaped one available from Force 4 (p 58 of their catalogue). Not used it, but looks more effective than the rusting folding pyramid.

We tend to have electric when moored up these days. So I bought a cheap mains toaster (£6) and will use that.

I had one of the 2 slice tent ones for years on the old boat and it was brilliant. Unfortunately I let it go when I sold the boat. I bought one of the folding pyramid ones for the new boat which was a waste of money.

Cheapo small generator plus cheapo sandwich maker, toaster, rice cooker, food mixer, TV/dvd combo etc plus can charge phones, laptop etc. All from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco as & when they come up. Cheapest generators from Wolf on-line, all our equipment is under 700 watts so runs on small generator which takes up little space. Also got an inverter for phone charging etc, 300watt cost us £10 odd new off E-bay. Has certainly added many plusses to our cruising especially with kids aboard.

Having tried most of the markets offerings, I have been using "this contraption" for several years now, and it is only just beginning to show signs of wear.

Without doubt it is the best toastmaker in my opinion, even though it is strictly one slice at a time - and at the price unbeatable.
