Best sail tie!

On the same boat I have used tape with a loop at one end and simple lengths of old sheets (9mm ish) and on a different but larger boat have the used the clip on ladder rack system. I found using lengths of old sheet with a reef knot the simplest way. The tape with a loop looks cleverer, but by the time I have put the end through the loop, pulled some through, decided that the loop will end up in the wrong place, rotated about the sail a bit, tightened it a bit more then tied the split hitch, all with a bit more friction than you might expect I find it easier just to pull the two ends of the sheet up over the sail, a quick tug to one side to level them out then tie the reef knot.

After some decades using different ideas and found most of them 'wanting' in the dark, in a seriously agitated seaway, and the heavy boom whipping about 'cos some cretin didn't think to sheet it in hard..... the best arrangement I've found is half-a-dozen continuous loops in cord - or light webbing, if you prefer. Don't make 'em too short.

They hang handily around your neck, there's no fumbling for the loop, the 'working' end tucks through the other very easily and without fumbles, and a half hitch ( or 'slippery hitch' if you must ) holds it secure. That's far faster, keeping one hand/arm for yourself therefore more security for you, than all the other ideas.

A loop of bungee with a plastic ball at one end is a great thing, if you enjoy it pinging out of your hand, around the boom, and thwacking down on top of your head.
