Best Rubbing Strake?

Hi.

I've bought a 23ft Westerly Pageant and the previous owner bought and half fixed a Vetus vinyl rubbing strake with a vinyl inlay.

The port side has been half fitted and bolted through.

To be honest i don't like it and I've spent some time looking on the internet for a wooden replacement.

None seem to be ideal and most aren't recommended.

Can anyone offer advice on what the best wooden, most affordable and easiest to fit option could be please.

Or do I stick with the Vetus?

A friend of mine has a Snapdragon which has a replacement rubbing strake made of some composition material. It is a sort of bronze colour and doesn't pretend to be wood but looks neat and practical to me.

If it was mine I think I would want to replace it with a wooden rubbing strake similar to the original . I guess iroko or similar.

It may need steaming to bend to shape at least over part of its length

You can get wooden rubbings strakes in teak from wwwkjhowells.com although they will not come in sufficient length to do a side in one piece so you will have to scarf them together with a long 1 in 12 scarf (not the short scarf Westerly used).

Fitting them is a very skilled job as you have to bend them to shape and then drill the holes for fixing bolts and as each side is going to cost you £150+ in material you won't want to mess up.

I agree. Also, i'm not that familiar with the Pageant, but some with Westerlies (at least) the rubbing strake was through bolted through the hull/deck joint. If that was the case, you'd have to consider how fitting vinyl or pvc might affect the strength there.
