Another definite, full marks, vote for Barry. I have bought all running rigging from him on Tigger (for the last 8 years) and have not been disappointed. Give him a call and place you order: you'll get the stuff by return of post. He'll send you free samples to look at, if in doubt. Now, I just follow his advice - it has never failed us.

Just been in touch with Barry to obtain another length of dockline and he's told me his URL was hijacked by another "Boatropes" who are about 50% more expensive.

so get in touch via his e-mail address - boatropes@barryedwards.co.uk

At the risk of being labelled chauvinist I'd recommend English Braids or Marlow over Liros as they're made in England.

On the other hand, like Vyv, I buy most of my rope from Barry Edwards of Boatropes who is consistently reasonably priced, excellent to deal with and always has first class products, many of which he sources in the US.

His sales window is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yacht-braid-braid-rope-8mm-12mm-Re-rig-singles-/330350768571

and I can thoroughly recommend him - he doesn't take credit cards though, I pay him by ETS.

Hi,

I am thinking of replacing the running rigging on my UFO 34 and am interested to know the best makes of braid on braid ropes available at a reasonable price in the UK ? I've heard of Liros & Marlow but are there other brands about that are as good or better ?

And while I'm here, how important is low-stretch in a rope for my purposes (non-racing) ?

Thanks,

Boo2
Originally I had braid on braid but when I changed to Hyde sails I could see the stretch in the halliards as the sail kept developing creases in the gusts & loosing them as the wind eased
I changed to dynema & solved the problem
As well as that a good dynema is miles stronger than braid on braid so I was able to go from 10mm braid on braid to 8mm dynema
This reduces friction & the sails go up ( or down) with ease. It is also cheaper than 10mm dynema
8 mm dynema takes about 4.5 Tonne breaking load so is certainly enough for my boat which is only 4.5 tonnes all up so I could lift the complete boat with the halliard , let alone the sails !!!!!

I am not sure there ever was a conclusion in this thread.
I know I want braid on braid for my new sheets, and dyneema for the halliards, but I can either buy Marlow or Kingfisher, or others, but the Kingfisher is less than half the price of the Marlow.
So, is it worth the extra?
Do you really get what you pay for?
Thanks

Having tried cheaper brands I will try to get marlow for my next halyards. I suspect that my 'jib' sheets are marlow and after 35 years of cruising use and being in the'sun' for 6 months a year they need replacing with hopefully marlow.

That's quite a recommendation! Are you sure they've really kept their core strength and comfortable handling since the 'seventies?

I bought Liros 12mm for my mainsheet...and it's a bit too plump for a couple of the blocks, so back I went for the 10mm version. Funny thing is, I can't tell 'em apart!

i have had the same English Braids racing dyneema as a main halliard for over 10 years. Soft on the hands, no stretch and very durable. well worth the money for this application.
