After some success in the North Sea this year with a hand-held mackerel line, I fancy a mounted reel to simplify recovering the tackle (and hopefully the fish!). Any good models to look out for? I guess some sort of line feeding is necessary and perhaps a gear box to speed up the process? Also, a simple way to remove the reel for storage when not in use.
Thanks.

I too was looking for a way to simplify paying out and recovering a mackerel line. Take a look at Bigjon.com and their rail mounted manual downrigger. It is not cheap but it is beautifully made. It's sold in the USA so it helps if you are visiting or have a contact to help with transportation.

We used two rods with multiplier reels slotted in plastic pipe and held on with cable ties inside the stern rails. The line was 50lbs with a wire trace and different coloured swimming lures, which will catch mackerel as well as feathered hooks. If you don't catch anytning wih one colour lure change to another colour, for example we had a red and white lure and and yellow and blue lure out and the yellow and blue one caught mackerel.
