This isn't about a reccomendation- so I hope folk don't think it should be in the "pubs and restaurants" section- and its essential cruising information anyway- but what do people think is the best riparian pub on the east coast?

The Butt and Oyster at Pin Milll was great before it got taken over by Brewmaster, and I had a soft spot for the Anchor at Brightlingsea, before it got turned into yuppie flats, event though, or perhaps because, the last landlord was clinically insane. At the moment, the Jolly Sailor in Orford is my front runner- taciturn landlord, excellent beer, though they do seem to have started serving food and Orford itself has been taken over by SUV driving w*nk**rs from Islington. The Green Man at Bradwell used to be a great pub, but went dowm when it was bought by a tattoed chav from Billiricay, but I hear it has recovered somewhat of late. Near enough to the river to qualify in London, the Royal Oak in Tabor Street, Borough, has excellent Harvey's beer(unique in London) and a good atmosphere. As you can see, my taste in boozers trends to the unadorned and traditional. What do others think?

Naaah, The Maybush at Waldringfield is grim- noisy townies only. Whereas, the Anchor at Woodbridge is decent, but they can't pour Guinness to save their lives.

Best pubs near water on the East Coast for me though, are the Lord Nelson and Steamboat Tavern, both in the Ipswich docks area. The Nelson for the best beer, food and friendliness, but quite "old" in there, while the Steamboat is more "youthful", with good live music and attitude. Not exactly pretty locations for either, but suits me.

I like the Victoria at Felixstowe Ferry
a man named Graham frequents the pub, and is a mine of information on local history

I'm glad someone knows that the East coast goes a bit past Essex and Suffolk . I wouldn't say anywhere in Boston is worth a visit , but there's loads that are . Kings Lynne is having a massive face lift so there are now good places there , Cromer is also worth more than a glance over the shoulder as you pass (if you can get that far ) , they've spent doodles on improving facilities . Yet so many still stick with what they know .

Micro rant over , enjoy your sailing all , I'm just jealous cos I'm still out of the water .

If you do ever have the experience of a night in Boston, The Ship is right next to the river near the swing bridge and does an excellent "extra-cold" Guinness. It also looks much nicer from the inside, nicely decorated with some large photos of Boston's past.

Probably best to leave it until the world cup dust settles, it's Portugese owned.........

The Old Ship at Levington - a pleasant walk up from the marina. Had superb meal there last Sunday. Can't comment on the beer but if you want the very best try The Swan at Little Totham, CAMRA national pub of the year - about five miles from Tollesbury but worth every yard.

My vote is also for the old ship at Levington. We had the best meal I can remember in May! You can't book and need to get there early as they have some strange sort of first come first served waiting list.

Another vote for the Ship at Levington. When our boat was there, we used to drive up after work on Fridays, arriving just in time for a really good supper at the Ship. It was the real start to the weekend on the boat. The food was superb.

Has the Ramsholt Arms changed hands recently?
I last went there 5 years ago and got extremely overcharged for mediocre food and a long wait.
I've never wanted to go back.

The Anchor, on the Green at Southwold - excellent Adnams and good food if you want. Also, Ramsholt Arms on the Deben and the Queens Head at Ewarton on the Stour.

No idea, I'visited a few times in the last couple of years (granted not on a busy Saturday) and was well fed at a fair price in quick order; and the beer is not bad either!

yes Ramsholt Arns did change hands about 4 years ago, does excellent food and us lucky mooring holders get 10% off. Beer is always good with a couple of Admams and a guest or two, Woodfordes Wherry, one of my favourites often turns up, and of course the location is stunning.

Butley Oyster is a lovely little pub, worth the 3 mile walk from the ferry dock.

Sorrel Horse Shottisham also good.

Cross keys Aldeburgh good food

Golden key Snape lovely little garden on a summers evening. Changed hands last year haven't eaten there since.

Shipwrights Hollowshore great selection of ales

Jolly Sailors at Orford used to (still may be) run by a couple called Phil and Jacquie. Prior to the Jolly Sailors they ran the Wherry at Geldeston which was my local some years ago. They are a lovely couple and certainly know how to keep a pint of Adnams! (God I miss Adnams but thats another story....)

I see some votes for the Ship at Levington. Its a great place for sure but more orientated towards food perhaps? Its not somewhere I ever thought of going for just a drink.

I can also commend* two in Maldon - The Queens Head as way the nicer of the two on the Hythe and for truly great pub grub the Swan Hotel on the High St. The taproom at the Blue Boar hotel is worth a look as well.

* my data is 18mths old living across the pond as I do now!
