Where are the best places to moor up for lunch/coffee in the solent?. I've seen a few places on the web (master builders hotel etc) but I'm not getting much out of the searches at the moment. Are there places you can moor up for free or at least get the mooring charge refunded from the meal bill?

Short answer is no, and certainly not at the Master Builder!

I guess the best bets involve anchoring. Here's a couple:

Newtown Creek - the little man will try and get you to make a donation for anchoring but tell him to get stuffed (nicely). Then go ashore and walk to Shalfleet where there is a nice pub. Don't get caught by the tide.....

Totland Bay - Anchor off the beach and go ashore. There are several cafes and it's a nice spot.

Hurst - anchor and go ashore to (?) The Gun (one of the locals on here will be able to advise). Tides are a bit of an issue.

For actual moorings or pontoons, try:

The Folly - not free, but as the moorings are council run they are, at least, cheap.

Or go across Poole Bay to Studland and use one of the Bankes Arms' moorings - I think they are free for customers.

Everything costs in the Solent - everything /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Teredo's link is one to keep as a favorite and being a member of Ashlett Creek SC I can recommend a visit. We have an LM 30 that draws 4ft 3" and there are a few boats that have deeper draughts. Come in on a rising tide and follow the chartlet, it's not as hard as it looks.

Don't be too hard on him, he has a difficult job. And I was very glad to see him a couple of months ago, when he pulled me off the mud there!

Take a look at Explorer OS maps for beermugs.
Then look at charts for water.
Combine the two and Bingo - diluted ale!

I sometimes heave to in the Solent to have a break [starboard tack].

No-one has been out to ask for money yet but I expect that day can't be far off.

Jolly Sailor at Bursledon, quite a bit of water at HW but does dry.

Horse and Jockey at Curdridge, no good for yachts as you wont get mast under bridge but other wise absolutely fab, follow river, turn right at fork.

Fishborne Sailing Club, never paid and not sure if I should? not much water but enough at HW for most.

Ok, I've run out.

No one has yet mentioned gin's farm up the Beaulieu River. I know it is part of the Poyal Southampton YC but I am pretty certain that a genuine yachtsman will get a decent welcome. Fabulous food and beer and great views.
