A mate of mine is about to replace a knackered engine and a Yanmar 4JH3E, about 50HP I think is favourite.
Does anyone know of a good place to buy? Or any other recommended engines of similar HP worth considering? TIA

I would ring E P Barrus, the UK Importer and ask them which of their dealers has experience of these engines. There are bound to be questions to be answered re the installation and if you deal with blokes who have actually done the job then the quality of advice is likely to be better. I know of at least one dealer who would gladly sell an engine but I would rather ask my Grandmother for installation advice.(PS she died 30 years ago!). Good luck. Paul

You can compare UK with Dutch prices at http://www.kaag.nl/wansem/index.html. Click on "binnenboordmotoren" for a price list. Yours is 10437 Euros plus VAT. Yanmars are "built" in Holland, that is they are built in Japan but some small component is bolted on in Holland, thus freeing them of all sorts of import duties. They may therefore be cheaper over here.

You could look at a Beta BV 2203, also 50HP. It is built in Gloucestershire, so not that far from your location.

cant comment on yanmar prices abroad, but in this country i have found cellar marine at porthallow cornwall to be an excellent yanmar dealer. tel 01326280214. their after sales service has been first class, and they are technically competent. i was happy enough with the first engine i bought from them that i bought a second one when my latest boat needed re-engining.

they have to fight hard to gain and keep customers in a location which is some way from a marina and has only a few fishing boats

no connection.
