I have just bought a 22ft Teal and the paintwork is shot (see picture) so I am going to sand her down with 320 grit prime her then over coat sand down the highs, re paint, sand top coat then sand again then a quick spit and polish. I know whe will never be perfect but I can only try.

Anyway my question is what is the best paint option? I am doing anti-fouling below the waterline and white above it. I know International is about the best but the price is a little high. So do I go single pack alkyd or two pack? I will be rolling and in an open boat yard so any help would be appreciated :)

Cheers in advance.

apologies if you already know this-----paint in the shade----paint one side in one go --absolutely no stopping----good luck

The secret in painting is all about the preparation - the final coat is the easy bit. If that is the original gel coat then the preparation required to get a good finish will be massive (not helped by the mock clinker planka10 and you may find it easier to invest the same amount of time and effort into cleaning up and polishing the gel coat. Painting a GRP boat is a one way street - once you have bone it you are stuck with it and if you don't do it properly it will likely look worse than it is at the moment. GRP does not need paint for protection it is purely cosmetic.

I agree with Tranona, spend your time and energy in polishing it, if it’s really scuffed/dull start with 1000 - 2000 - 3000 - Cut - Polish - Wax. Try the transom first.

Try Mirka disks and Farecla cutting compound and polishes

invest in a good D/A sander and a good Polisher and foam pads with a lambs wool polishing bonnet.

There are some good YouTube videos

Take your time and you will be amazed

Hi its a painted finish already and looks terrible up close. I looks like epoxy to me as it has chalked really bad and is dusty to the touch. There are lots of chips also. The boat has been stood in the yard where it is for the last two years untouched. I want it white again so will just have to spend some time doing a lot of prep lol :) I don't mind the work

I know a bit about this.

famous last words ???

I used SML paints both 2 pack and single pack. Use a long thinner to increase working time. You can get a great finish buts a lot of work. Still gives me nightmares ??

Wow a Palmetto Custom .... I nearly bought one of these back in my Dubai days (pre2008-recession) .... ended up with a Gulf Craft 31, with twin Suzuki 160's

Unlikely to be epoxy and most paints don't chalk. Flat it all down, fill and fair the chips and then use a single pack like Toplac with a Prekote undercoat. It is much easier to get a good finish than with 2 pack, particularly with all those edges to deal with. With the change from blue to white and lots of filling and fairing probably 3 coats of Prekote and 2 of Toplac.
