Best Outboard Lock

It's also real easy to steal the outboard by removing the one bolt that the outboard swivels on leaving the mounting bracket and lock behind.
Then purchase a mounting separately.
Have you priced a transom clamp?
Even the screws are not cheap (I have a slightly bent one and thought I would replace it. Pack of 2 --£40!!)

When you can buy a battery angle grinder for £48 there isn't much that will make your motor safe. Just make sure you have an insurance approved lock.

I have a Honda Marine barrel lock for our BF2.3 but the locking mechanism has diappeared. Mailed OML this morning to see if it was possible to buy only a new lock. Response was quick (inside 30mins) and asked for photos and measurements - will see what they can come up with but so far so good.

I may be able to help. Is it just the lock itself and keys you need or the end piece that the lock fits into?

The OML lock has changed in the last couple of years so it depends when you bought it. The old version had a metal comb shaped piece that went over the turnscrews. The newer once don't but are rectangular in shape.
If it is just the lock and looks like one used in this picture I have one.

We did have an OML lock that looked like the Baltic one here.
http://www.outboardmotorlocks.co.uk/product-baltic.html but with the lock from the above picture on the cylinder wall and not the end.
We ended up buying the Baltic lock and using the comb from the old lock.
I decided not to buy the specifically designed Honda rectangular lock that replaced our original Honda cylindrical lock on the basis that if we change outboard the Baltic Slot lock gave the flexibility for a range of sizes.

If there was one design change that I would make to the OML lock it is that each part should have a small hole in it so the parts can be joined with a piece of chord. At the moment it's very easy to drop one part overboard. (Hence spare lock and barrel.)

I have no idea but I would be interested to know if the Police actually check for Smart Water. The synical in me sais the police wouldn't unless the stickers were still there and even then I doubt it.

police custody suites automatically check scrotes for presence of smart water.
The fences who know how to detect if smart water has been used so wont touch anything marked

I quote an insurance underwriter

"As an underwriter for an insurance company, like you, I believe its quite right (but maybe a tad trendy?) to be cynical about new developments such as SmartWater.

But, sadly, unlike some of you I have to do my homework, particularly when we're considering investing heavily in new technology.

For one thing, none of you have identified that SmartWater is a policing crime reduction strategy - and, if you look closely enough, you'll find that it works.

It is NOT a property recovery service and when they (SmartWater) presented the concept to us, they made it clear that they were not claiming it was a panacea to crime.

Their statistics were both impressive and, upon checking, robust. They claim an average 55% reduction in burglary in every city that operates their strategy properly. So, 45% still suffer burglary so you're bound to get the occassional bad news story.

We took the decision to make it mandatory for our clients to use SmartWater to protect their valuable items. Like Prof Gill, our research shows it to be the most powerful deterrent in the UK today."

Thanks Talulah - it actually looks like the Honda Marine one on OML site - will take a few photos and measurements tonight. I am just missing the lock - the comb, tube and plastic cover are there.

This is why I pay my subscription - for the wise advice and to keep you in the style to which you wish to become accustomed ;) When are you going to come and take some nice photos of Strangford (actually don't - it's a horrible place full of ugly beauty spots where you can't sail all year round in peace and tranquility).

A sad state of affairs. When i was based on the Medway, a boat sank due to the fact that the outboards had been cut off the stern complete with its locking system.

One thing to bear in mind, that if you are going off piste to locks not designed for the marine environment the lock mechanism can contain some lovely ferrous metal inside.

If you'll be getting any sea water near the lock, it really should be an all brass lock mechanism :)
I used to to give it a regular squirt of 3 - in - 1. It's still in good nick now although no longer used for the outboard. I've got a Seagull now and no-one in their right mind would pinch it.
