as simple as that. What are your favorite sailing related blogs in terms of being an entertaining read and informative on the subject chosen?

I thought it might be good to have a post with a collection of the best since I would like to read them, I lack a regular source of light reading but don't know where to find them, and the ropey internet connection I suffer means trawling though peoples' sigs is tedious at best.

So come on, spill your finds. Who's funny? Who's the wise old seadog? Who's the nutter?

I try to follow several - Johnny H is very good. So is Stingo's (great sense of humour).
The one I follow most closely at the moment is Guapa's - honest, personal and well written. All IMHO, of course.

Seriously, not a blog tip, but couldn't you activate your blog's RSS-feed? It really would help to have it in google reader. You can always see it as a service to people who have slow internet connections - reader does work in a cellphone as well.

a few years ago a friend of mine living in Australia with virtually zero sailing experience beyond a few weeks crewed charter and a few days dinghy sailing in his teens decided to escape the rat race race and go sailing. He is certainly not in his teens now......

His website details how they went about learning to sail, choosing a boat, getting ready for the trip. The blog link above is the story of them sailing around Australia - they are almost three months into the trip.

Unlike many bloggers, Reinhard can actually write, which makes following the blog very pleasurable. Plus he updates it every other day, so stays current.

Interesting blog, I agree, better written than most. I started at the beginning.... (a few hours ago!)

Not sure I would run downwind to furl a headsail though.

My tip is don't do it, you nutter! haha. No, seriously, that is one hell of an adventure. I have been into bikes all my life, spending a year working in a bike shop too, and I am well aware of how hard what you're about to undertake is. The best of luck to you, and masses of respect.
 
We ran a blog during the SIPR a couple of weeks ago - not because we had much to say but more because it was an adventure and we wanted to update families without sending hundreds of texts.
Having looked around at options we used a couple of blackberries and blogger.com. You can tap out your updates on the handset, snap some pics to go along with them, and leave it to worry about sending the mail through next time you hit signal - ideal really and easier than worrying about keeping a netbook/notebook all charged, dry and safe on board (particularly as engine use was so limited by the rules and we were on a minimum-power mode on board). As soon as the mail arrives, blogger converts it and adds it as the next post in sequence. From those that followed the blog (somehow we got followers in Oz and Canada...) they said it worked really well and there was nothing lost from having lesser quality snaps while the race was on. For the decent pics we had a proper gallery online afterwards.

Would thoroughly recommend that approach - portable, simple, no fuss and those following the blog loved it.
