I'm now fortunate enough to be able to spend more time at my little casita in Ibiza. Whilst I took my ICC some years ago I've never had time to enjoy exploring the Balaerics until now. What would be a suitable size (safe, low maintenance, comfortable) motorboat capable of the occasional crossing from Ibiza to Mallorca? All help appreciated !

This one is going to be open to a lot of personal preference, and is a bit of an open ended question. you could cross between Ibiza and mallorca in practically anything on a calm day.

But for me and assuming were talking some sort of planing boat as opposed to a displacement boat ( I have no experience of those) ,I'd be wanting 30 foot or larger and twin engines.

Perhaps if you don't mind going places slowly one of those traditional style mallorquin boats would do the trick?

I've done it in a sealine s34, which was perfectly fine.

I do occasionally contemplate going across in my current boat , a windy 25, but the single engine concerns me a bit, seems irrational though as I'm fine with a single engine when in sight of land albeit several miles off land, but not if out of sight of land. Is there really a difference between the two Scenarios.

Thanks,
I was thinking around 30ft. Don't really want invest in anything expensive as the majority of the time will be spent around Ibiza and Formantera. If we get as far as Mallorca id like to be able to overnight too

Probably looking around £20k - £30k. Don't really want to invest much more. Hopefully upto 15 years old. I've seen a Gobbi 27 Sport advertised which looks quite pretty but don't really know much about them

......and if you are paying in sterling a excellent time to buy something locally.
Just search the web and see what you can get for your money compared to UK.Probably save 20% or get a much bigger/newer/better boat.

Yes it is a good time to buy. Just looking for advice as what would be best for my needs. Plenty of choice out there which makes the decision harder !!

We had a Targa 40 in Palma and it would take us anywhere.

Our boating is if flat we go if rough we don't, so as above a 20 foot boat would work.

Ibiza to Mallorca is not far. 2 hours.

The bigger consideration is your general comfort. Air Con, number of people on board etc. We are 2 adults and 2 kids and a Targa 40 ticked all the boxes and was ( in relative terms) cheap to run.

Also bear in mind Ibiza has very few marinas - which are hence expensive. Mallorca is full of them ( sadly that does not make then that cheap - but still cheaper than the Solent - go figure!)

In Mallorca there were companies offering put your boat in for 4 weeks then store it in a warehouse type services, but these were generally for boats of upto about 30 feet ish. Different places will offer different services.

Thanks for the input. I'm definately thinking twin engines it would help with my confidence. Budget is £20k - £30k but would go higher for the right boat upto 15 years old. Would be happy with something around 30 ft if the consensus is that would be a safe option to get between Ibiza and Mallorca on the odd occasion. I've seen a pretty Gobbi 27 Sport online but don't know much about them ?

Vert and Vert in Club De Mar do this. Boat on the back of a trailer - lift in - lift out and stick it back in the shed when you are done.

They are German and speak better english than I do!

What about a big RIB
You can get places quickly
Anchor in shallow water
You would find a lot more small calas and bays.
And dry sail it (store it on a trailer in the winter months)
Maybe the budget would stretch to one with a small cuddy for keeping clothes dry etc.

Fairline Targa 30/34/38/40 all great boats as is Princess v39 or smaller Sunseekers. Loads available just see what you like the look of, get a survey and you're away. If you choose the wrong one or want to upgrade then all are easy to sell on.

Don't think you need to start small, plenty of people start with big boats (40ft or more) and are fine.

Post draft contract here before you pay a penny deposit.

I think a Cranchi csl 28 would suit.

You can pick them up with twin KAD32 diesels for well under £30k and they have decent overnight accommodation abd lots of med deck space

Good call. Cabin is very small but if this isn't an issue for the OP then Windy Mirage 25 would be another great choice. Class leading handling, a decent cockpit and just enough space for a overnight stay (as long as you don't need an enclosed loo).

I have a windy 25 in mallorca, and whilst it's a great boat and can handle a heavy sea no problem, and I'm sure it would have no issues going between mallorca and Ibiza , I am reluctant to do that because of the single engine. Maybe you could fit a wing outboard as a backup? Not sure how you'd do that without ruining the styling on the boat though.

They are very cheap to run though, and great fun ,and work well for a couple for overnighting.

We're off to Cabrera for an overnight stop on Friday on ours.
