A carabinier clipped to an eyebolt is not reliable. Hard to explain but, say the eyebolt is in the deck: lay the carabinier flat on the deck, rotate it towards the spring side, it will let go every time as the clip hits the other side of the eye.

That is why their use on tethers is not allowed on ISAF offshore races. How some people can skimp on such a life-saving device and not fit proper locking clips is beyond me. I have seen harnesses for sale with a 'tether' made out of polypropylene rope and three simple snap carabiners!

IMHO their sale ought to be banned outright.

Sorry for the drift but it is something that really and seriously bothers me.
