My wife and I are currently coastal weekend sailers whilst working in the UK - we would like to sail home to Australia in about a year's time. Obviously this kind of trip needs a lot of planning - Can anyone recommend the best book they have read on doing this kind of trip? - Also I read on another forum that I would have to pay import duty on my yacht, bought in the UK if I sailed home - Does anyone know if this is true and how I might avoid this please?

As far as books go, you might have a look at Ann Hammick's "Ocean Cruising on a Budget". The Ocean Cruising Club and the Seven Seas Cruising Association might also be good sourdes of information. For the tax problem, why don't you phone the Australian High Comission in London ? They'd be the right source for the official answer.

here\'s a few

beth leonard: the voyager's handbook. the best i've come across for details of preparation.

for route planning there are several books by jimmy cornell but they are v expensive.

the atlantic & pacific crossing guides are good in parts

I\'d second those, plus....

I like Annie Hill's 'Voyaging on a small income'. Even if you don't agree with everything she says, her philosophy and ideas make an awful lot of sense.

There is a general rule (in Europe at least) that if you own something for at least 6 months before moving you can then declare it in your (household ?) possessions and can import it tax free.

I don't know if the same applies in Australia but I would imagine that these provsions are fairly standardized now on an international basis. Check anyway.

Yes, you will have to pay GST on the boat in Australia.
After having been there and done it I can say almost without exception that all the books written on Ocean cruising are outdated and not worth buying. The exception being, Geoff Pack's excellent book, Bluewater countdown, published by YM. Unfortunately he didn't live to update it but is a great read from a very knowledgeble guy, although his experience doesn't extend beyond the Caribbean. Also, as someone else said, don't leave with out Nigel Calders book!!!
Good Luck

You could try "Handbook of Offshore Cruising" by Jim Howard (pub. Adlard Coles Nautical).
