I inherrited some clean & wax from the previous owner of Merit but it requires a clean surface so I went to the swindlery to find some cleaner and was totally confused by what was on offer. What are peoples experiences & views?

Judders try a search on Oxalic Acid. I buy that and mix in wall paper paste for a bit of sticking consistency.
Not at home, so I cant remember the constiutuent quantities, but it cleans GRP a treat, takes out the yellowing.

I use 3M wax, but Meguiars is v good too.

If you want to polish GRP, the cheapest and possibly best product is cornflour. Mix it to a paste with water and polish away with a clean cloth/polishing head. Been using it on surfboards for years, and can even be used while afloat as it is completely environmentally friendly.

Try Collinite range of polishes , excellent results with little effort . Long lasting . one polish lasts the whole season . I found this product on shipshapenorfolklt.uk . Best I have used

YEP! Especially by the pallet load!

"Wipe out" £10 for enough to last two seasons mix to paste like milk of magnesia apply and wipe off with lashings of water. It has oxalic acid in it . Good stuff. Farecla etc is a compound for removing old film and stains - quite heavy duty - don't know if you have that sort of need - but it's v good stuff and wouldn't use more than once maybe twice as it is removing your gelcoat.

I don't say its best but it seems to do the trick .....

Thanks for posting the pics. Now I'm convinced what cleaner i need. Do you use crystals, spray or liquid?

I bought the std bottle of liquid ... just pour onto cloth and away yer go ... it's not easy - still needs a bit of elbow work.... but blimey at about a quid a bottle - I don't mind a bit of work compared to some chandlery snake-oil !!

To finish off - I have Turtle wax Extreme Polish .... says on the bottle suitable for ALL finishes and "Lasts through months of weathering" .... Haven't used it yet - but reckon that'll do the trick.

Have to wait for weather to warm up now ..... it's -15C out there at moment and averaging -10C during day ... rather stay in front of the Log Fire ......

Re: Best GRP Cleaner - forgot to add !!!!

That is "Cilit Bang Lime & Rust Remover" .... actually the one used in the bathroom to remove water and rust marks from the porcelain !

I'm told it also removes built-up salt deposits as well - but haven't tried that yet.

Try Jif

It's designed for baths (Fiberglass) and it does work well on boats. Its also good for removing the black stuff from wheels of cars when washing won't remove.
I used to use it to remove fly’s and mess off the front of a company van without any damage to the paintwork.

It’s ok as long as you apply polish afterwards. I have also found some of the car waxes in Halfords better than their marine equivalents.

Jif is also cheap /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To remove yellowing, try Harpic Limescale Remover- as advertised on the telly. You can watch it work in minutes, and it's CHEAP. Didn't harm my paint either.

Safe sailing
