I used PU glue on some oak shelving about 6 years ago, and have noticed some movement in the joints recently.

With some more oak work coming up, which I need to be really long-lasting, what alternatives are there please ?

I do have a couple of tubs of Cascamite for use with pine, but have never used it on oak because of the acidity. Would a wipe over with solvent (e.g. Thinners 7) make the surface more receptive to Cascamite ?

TIA

Titebond-especially the weatherproof type 2 or 3? .The wood will break before the glue lets go.Amazing for any woodworking project. It sets enough in 15min. to hold project together & full strength in 24hrs. Huge improvement over older "white cabinet makers" glues.

In the days when I worked on wooden boats (mostly ply) the two glues recommended were cascamite and aerolite - I tended to use Cascamite and never had any problems with it. I would certainly never have considered using a PVA based adhesive (Resin W) for any boat work, and I don't really like it for external woodwork.

These days they seem to recommend Epoxy. One of the boatyard programmes showed building a play boat from scratch and he uses epoxy with a bit of filler - from the way he was using it it was superior to any glue I have ever used

In your link the chap used softwood (pine par) and hardwood (oak flooring)
epoxy with filler came out well for oak but not the best

I am hoping that the joints will be almost interference fits, especially in the visible front.

AFAIK, you don't add so many balloons as to thicken the epoxy, but to act as a bonding spacer so the thickness of adhesive is sufficient.

I once was involved in building an oak framed car port, and that was the reason I was told by the suppliers. In that case though the reason was that to header section weighed well over half a tonne so would have squeezed out all but a trace of the resin! Probably won't make much difference in your case.

I would use the Cascamite, it is water soluble so wipes off easily
