best fast cruising boat for 25K ?

Hi all,
I hope to upgrade soon from my 26 footer to a 31-34 footer, capable of sailing scotland/ireland /France with a crew of 2/3. I plan to spend 25K for a boat needing no major work. Top of the list at present Gibsea 312 or perhaps Dehler 34 - any other suggestions welcome ? - nothing too racy but would like a nice turn of speed ( you know the eternal compromise.....)
 
I think you would be very very fortunate to find a Gibsea 312 or Dehler 34 that required no major work for 25k.... in fact I think you would be fortunate to find a 312 or Dehler 34 that would be seaworthy for 25k..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OTOH... I think you could get a decent Sadler 32 for that sort of money.... or a decent Rival 32 or 34 with a bit of looking....

looked at a sigma 33 but the absence of an double cabin aft was a significant no - think i know my selection criteria now

tiller steering
aft cabin
well looked after
not too light - able to take a reasonable sea
fin keel
not too slow/heavy - been there
reliable engine not needing replacing in the next few years
31-34 feet
as young as possible but definitely not pre 1980
last but probably first - owner that talks my kind of language -no hard sell straight down the line warts and all
 
Been looking for the same sort of thing myself...but I've found something, so I can share my thoughts with you...anyway on our list was:

Sadler 32
First 305
First 35 (older)
Ohlson 35 (too old for you and no aft cabin, mid 70's, but there is an Ohlson 38 in the canaries for 24K which I saw when I was down there a few years ago)
Older well worn Sadler 34s
Pioneer 10 (still too old and no AC, but mighty pretty)

You'll prolly have to go to about 32K to get what you want, but you might be able to get a bargain if those pesky europeans don't get to them first, bear in mind that with the £ as it is at the mo they euro crowd are effectively getting 25% off....so bargain hunting isn't as easy as one thinks....
 
You might get this Contessa 33 with a bit of bargaining. Please don't confuse the 33 with the 32. The 33 is a Rob Humpheys design. I used to own one of these superb boats. The excellence of design, coupled with first class construction, plus a surprisingly luxurious interior and good turn of speed make them a winner.
 
Yep saw that..I think it was Ex Sea school, hove to, someone pointing /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif (UKSA? maybe) but I didn't like the interior, I like a bit of tree wood in my boats /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To get an idea of performance, have a look at this page to see the relative racing handicaps. You will be surprised at the speed of some boats that are not known as "racy" - for example, the Sadler 32 is no faster than the Westerly Konsort 29 on handicap

The Dehler 34 is quoted as having a PY of 941. Look down the list for other boats of a similar handicap .

Is it me or is there something wierd about those numbers ?

"890 Dehler 33 Cruising
941 Dehler 34"

So why is the cruising version of the D33 so much quickler than the D34 ?

Because the D33 was one hell of a quick boat. Built in 3 models (marketing) there were racing, cruising and prestige IIRC.

Very narrow, very plumb stemmed, and quite a lot of sail area. A different animal from the previous 34, which was IOR derived.

I think you might have to bump your budget up by 5 or 10 grand....

That link is interesting, how do they arrive at the displacement hull speed? Is it theoretical maximum speed? I know v. little about racing...
 
What about a Jeanneau?

Have none of you guys sailed on a Jeanneau Attalia or a Symphonie?

Not sailed the Attalia, but they are spacious with a nice wooden interior.
While the Symphonie is just as spacious but without the same wooden interior (could be date of manufacture etc). But she handles like a Dinghy and her turn of speed is very good….borderline impressive! :D
Very responsive with the three cylinder Yanmar, impressive control from the rudder (like a Dinghy) and comes in the first three in most of the races under all conditions.
