Best extra-long shaft outboard, for driving displacement hulls?

What you need for ultimate torque at low revs is a steam-engined outboard

Now that would be lovely and quiet too, and it might fry your breakfast.

But I see it appears to have a 360 degree swivel for reverse - might make stoking it a bit problematic?

I didn't look that closely. Most steam boats just reverse the engine.

what about converting a long shaft silver century plus into a 6kw electric motor driven?
it could then run at the right revs for displacement hulls and run in reverse too!

i have a cunning plan!

However on a head to head tug of war with a Seagull Barge Pusher my money would be on the Seagull.

Stern to Stern would make more sense.
