Hi all. Need new engine and probably go with a beta. There are a number of dealers in the clyde area, including MMS Scotland in Ardrossan and Fruin Engineering in Rhu.

I'm told MMS are good but would welcome anyone else's experience of these two companies.. Any recommendations for either of them based on your experiences etc.

Thanks!

I very warmly recommend Sterling Yacht Services (John Stirling) at Port Bannatyne. They fitted my new Nanni beautifully last year but are normally Beta agents. Excellent standard of work, very nice people to deal with.

Used these Guys for my PERKINS 4236 full service and check over and recommendations , good guys on time, prompt replies to e mails, and keep you informed. engine first start on key, after sitting on hard for over a year from previous owners.
MMS at Adrossan have a good reputation ,but could not book him for my engine and my boat was at Adrossan , he is extremely busy with the fishing fleet , so that might be an issue.

A seconding for Sterling Marine in Port Bannatyne.
Careful, economic and tidy, with thoughtful and experienced advice.
Fitted my new 30 horses last year after a disasterous oil leak ruined 2017.

Hi

All the below come with good reputations to be fair and I’m certain all would do just fine and also give piece of mind, should any niggles be requiring ironing out after wards (often the case with a new engine)....but....with such a small and manageable engine...would you maybe be tempted to have a go yourself ? It’s not hard on this scale. The key is in the alignment and the scariest thing to me would be perhaps glass work perhaps required for engine mounts. To others this may be less daunting that the engine maybe. Certainly worth a go if you are in any way mechanically inclined ?

Agreed. Not only should it cost less but you will know the installation thoroughly. Essentially, my only cost over and above the engine, was a few minutes with the yard fork-lift to lift the old engine out and the new one in. Getting it aligned was a challenge but I took the opportunity to add a flexible joint so, although I think I got it right, it wasn't quite so critical.

Not everybody has the time to do that. In my case every trip to the yard involves two hundred miles by car and an hour on ferries. I am also far too large to fit more than the occasional bodily appendage into my engine compartment.

Making your own sails is fun too. You understand how your rig works and you don't waste money on sailmakers ...

You need serious space for sail construction.
Having removed and replaced 3 or 4 motorcycle engines , 3 or 4 car engines and assorted gearboxes, I would not baulk at a yacht engine. Most of it is at least as accessible as a road vehicle engine, often better. I've only had the head off a Yanmar engine once. Fairly easy, since most engines I've dealt with are OHC.

If you have time, some skill, and patience, do it yourself. If not find a friendly professional?
