Best edible fish choice Canaries ?

We're off to Gran Canaria for our annual first of the season Sunfest (7 days by Easyjet) next Monday ! On Tues morning I shall be there in Arguinguin market looking at a display of fish few of which I shall recognise . Can any of you Bluewater folk advise some of the better choices (Spanish names of course) ? Conachair seems to spend a lot of time in that region...perhaps he knows ?

Plenty fish down here /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Local favorite seems to be Dorada (gilthead bream) which conveniently is also the local beer. Also probably plenty Caballa (cabaya, horse mackeril though they seem a bit small at the moment), the tuna (atun) is fantastic but they seem to murder it in the restaurants, cooked til dry and tough, I like it still a bit red in the middle. Cherne (wreckfish, a sort of grouper) is good in the restuarants but never tried cooking it myself, they're HUGE. Also you get some Lubina (seabass, delish). And various other moray eels and colorful offerings. If you try fishing yourself watch out for the little blue weeverfish which seem to thrive down here, if those spines get your little finger it REALLY REALLY hurts a very lot. Been there. I'm actually heading over Gran Canaria prob tomorrow for a liftout next week either in Mogan or Puerto Rico, gimme a shout if you want to meet for a beer.... or do some sanding /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Second the thoughts on Lubina. You might also come across Sama, which is a local fish.

Ohhhhh Crowthorne, lived there for many years!

Anyway fish. Boca Negro (black mouth) very nice and our favourite 'Vieja' very large scales and big eyes, usually served in restaurants like kippers ie cut and flattened out (not smoked!!)

Are you sure of this? I had always thought that Gilthead bream and Dorada are two different species.

Thanks for that! I knew dementure had no set in yet. nice fish by the way. Last time I was in the canaries I saw some huge Dentex bream landed.

One letter makes all the difference /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Dorado is mahi mahi but pretty sure down here dorada is gilthead bream. certainly looks the same anyway. Dorado is indeed delicious, caught a couple coming back down from Azores last summer. As too are dorada - especially the little bit behind the cheek /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

That's a hell of a dolpin! Used to catch them in Bermuda, but not that big.

My favourite always wahoo, a steak straight on the barbie was just fine !!

Hi, does anyone know of any good books with reference to the catching, indentifing and the prep/cooking of fish found in the Atlantic and Med.

Don't know of a book that does all three, but Alan Davidson's North Atlantic Seafood and the companion volume on Mediterranean fish is an excellent identification guide plus some recipes. The good thing is that it includes the range of "local" names for the fish which is helpful

The Cruisers handbook to fishing by Scott & Mary Bennerot seems to be the definative book though more biased towards the tropics.

Sh*t, have I really been drifting round here that long? Any day now. Almost set off but thought the bottom needed a scrub then got a bit breezy from Gomera to Tenerife so now added to the scrub is getting the jib sewed back together and hopefully finding a new blade for windgen. actually you are not that far off except I cannot see the Gilthead marking on this fish, but it is supposedly a Dorada. Perhaps the mark is a Male/Female thing.
