No need to put up with it, as @pvb says, have a go at SH - they'll change it and spare you a return visit to the grumpy chandler.

Well yes, I can do that, but why did they give me a second one like it? Why would I expect the 3rd one to be any better?

You see! Its me thats grumpy about it now!

I'll call them.

I recently bought an Icom IC M73 Euro. I chose this for longer battery life & a better on/off/volume switch than my earlier Icom with push button on/off & seperate volume control. I do not really like the charging unit. It was a pain with my last Icom & I cannot understand why one cannot just plug it in & wedge the radio on a chart table so it does not fall on the floor when the boat heels.
I am very pleased with clarity & range.
As for Cobra-- I have just had a weekend doing ferry services for an old gaffer race & a friends Cobra seemed to miss a lot of calls from boats requesting the ferry. I had to relay the call to him when he did not reply several times. Based at Stone SC, I was picking up lots of calls from West Mersea & did pick upVHF calls from further away quite regularly.
A couple of yachts had radios with ATIS & I thought that was extremely irritating. An annoying bleep after each call. I also thought one was supposed to turn it off when in UK waters.
Off thread--I was surprised how many people started speaking before they had fully pressed the transmit button so one missed the first 2 words.- Quite confusing sometimes requiring a "say again" reply

If it's any consolation, I've got another Garmin gps being changed under warranty. And then there's Nextbase and the fact that they seem to have picked me as their development guinea pig. The third 411 dashcam is on its way back this week.

Of course, if anyone has a favourite that's not on my list, I'd love to know.

I have handled both Icom and Standard Vertex. The Standard vertex appeared to have a badly fitting battery cover. Almost as if it was the wrong component. There is no way the battery compartment would be kept free of water. I questioned the owner who had received it in that condition and it was why she had asked me to look at it.. It was easy to use but like others at my age and with infrequent use I would need the manual in my pocket or a quick action crib list of commands. This was returned to the vendor and the owner later asked me to help deal with it when it returned. It seems thy had returned an Icom.? The plastic case seemed more superior to the Vertex and was soon able to do the various routines. One thing that confused me was that it had what appeared to be a standard MMSI number. Seems that is what Ofcom gave the owner when licensing it. I am afraid I would put a Cobra third.
Both Standard Vertex and Icom are usually very reliable and normally I prefer Standard Vertex . Was puzzled by the problem of the battery cover which was moulded at a different radius to the back of the radio. It is difficult to believe that other radios have this fault as it was obviously not going to effect a seal with the body. Maybe others can comment if they have come across this.

I thought this was ATIS but it is not..... This is for the CB addicts who can not live with out it. I have discussed it with a boat owner across the river as it drives me mad. It is a R O G E R B E E P !!!!!!! A function that can be switched on and off, a musical note on the screen is displayed when on. It saves him saying over .. So he says.
