Best (cheap) sacrificial strip material?

I have searched the forum, honestly I have, but I can not pin down exactly which material to go for. I am planning to DIY a replacement sacrificial strip on the furled Genoa.

I am afraid I heve spent all my sailing tokens for the time being and simply can not,afford to pay a sailmaker, so planning on doing it myself. I have a good old fashioned sewing machine by the way.

Sunbrella is expensive, is there a cheaper alternative I could look at? Polyester? PU coated or not?

Any recommendations?

Best budget fabric for Uv strip and also easiest to apply and sew has to be Odyssey from Kayospruce - you will get about 3 lengths from the width of cloth so for example if you have 15m of leech and foot you will only need to buy 5m of cloth, most sailmakers will have it in stock and may sell it to you off the roll. Make sure you use a decent Uv resistant thread though otherwise that will be the weakest link and also to help hold it all in place before sewing use DS taPe (get a roll of 12mm while your in there !!)

Thanks for asking, didn't go well really, got an apology from my consultant today. They made a mistake, but we are all only human. Your operating theatre was wonderful but I only remember the anaesthetist room though!

I would happily sell you some offcuts or roll ends . We don't use oddysey as it's not very long lasting and can make the sail very green with algae due to its waterproof backing, the pu coating .
.I would suspect that the sunbrella is going to be a bit on the heavy side both for your sail and sewing machine ,particularly for a non walking foot machine .
So my choice would be weathermax which has a 5 yr guarantee.We have been using it more than 5 yrs and have not replaced one of our strips yet
it's lighter and more manageable than acrylic ,provided you can lay the sail out flat.Use a V92 UV resistant thread and lots of double stided tape to keep it in position.

Probably the cheapest would just be a strip of dacron sailcloth.

Never had any complaints from our customers when we've used Odyyssey - found it lasts at least five years and longer with regular valeting - weathermax is good but more expensive, more difficult to apply as it doesn't stick well with even the best DS tapes and frays when cut so for a Diy effort it's not the simplest of jobs !! And the OP was being careful with the yachting tokens i will stand by my suggestion !

my new hood is weathermax 80 rather than sunbrella, its lighter & expect it to last longer too. sunbrella was rotten @ 10 yrs
