I am getting my yacht coded for chartering. The Mecal requirements state that I need two lifebuoys, a danbuoy with light fitted to one of the lifebuoys, 2 lifebuoy lights, and lifebuoy drougues fitted to lifebouys with lights (!)

What is the best arrangment for connecting the lifebuoy, light and drogue? How much line between lifebuoy and light, and then light and drogue?

I would be grateful for other's experince in satisfying the MECAL requirements

About a metre for the light? Also, I think your supposed to have a whistle and a drogue attached as well. Our danbuoy has around 10 meters of floating line attached. Which I regularly forget to tie to the lifebuoy.

Once you've rigged that little lot, just for a laugh, see how far you can throw it!

If your danbouy has a light this satisfies the light requirement for one of the lifebouys.

Drogues can be attached to the lifebouy as can the light, they don't need to be in series.

Dan bouy (with light) attached to one life bouy.
floating Light attached to other lifebouy.
Both lifebouys attached to drogues.

Thanks for all the advice. One gets the feeling the requirements were drawn up by a committee. ALso needed is a man overboard recovery device. What exactly is not specified. I assume they mean a rescue sling.

I get the feeling that one has to tick the boxes and then get real.

Once I have the Mecal certificate, all I'll then need is people to charter the yacht!
