Best Android Tablet for Navigation in 2017

If I buy a cheap generic Android tablet will it come with some basic apps? Eg a web browser of some sort so I can use a search engine? Excuse my ignorance...

Android comes from Google, who have an interest in everyone being able to do web searches! Plus there is a choice of free alternative browsers to download too.

The generic I bought from China came setup with Chinese browser and defaulting to Chinese web sites.
At one point, I had to do a factory reset and the menu came up in Chinese, challenging!

That's when you need another device (smartphone?) with a translate program. Mine managed a menu in Greek quite well for us on a sailing holiday earlier this year.

I've used a Sony Z2. It's got a beautiful screen, but it's extremely fragile, and the waterproofing is fragile. A little knock on mine smashed the screen. I tried to install a new screen myself, but the screen is so extremely thin that I cracked that one, too, in the process of installing it :(

So now using a Samsung Tab Active (T-365). Much less nice display than the Sony, but this one is really rugged and properly waterproofed. I'm pleased and can recommend.

You can buy them cheap (compared to the very dear new price) second hand because they were bought in large quantities by companies who sell them on after a few years, sometimes in virtually unused condition.

Out of interest, what sort of cradles are people using to secure their tablets and where?

I have included a few links for you to browse the best are meant to be the ROKK but there are other good models and to fit to your boat
I have mine on my pedestal which has a flat piece of teak like a small table this allows me to clamp it on and use a waterproof case with a safety cord attached

This is a good question. Application gives you possibility to copy charts like any other files with use of the file browser of a smartphone, tablet or a PC. Skipper is not expensive. It can be used as a backup of the main navigation system.
It does not require newe Android system and works also on less efficient devices.
I am a developer of The Skipper. It is not my target to compeete with Navionics but maybe there is a niche for this application.
