What is the one best snippit of advice that you've ever been given, in boating, or that you would pass on?

Seems quite stupid and obvious but having seen and taught quite a few people doing exactly the opposite mine would have to be:

If the boat is doing what you want, don't mess with it.

Awaiting with interest...

I can think of two pieces of advice that really helped me enjoy my boating more.
1. Remember, its just a boat
2. Dont be too embarrased to admit your limitations, and ask for help if needed.

Think twice & DO ONCE.

Also, Plan; Do; Review.
It's the Kolb Learning cycle & encourages you to review all your actions & learn any lessons there may be from the outcomes of your actions.

Finally; Apply the 20 min rule before reefing etc.
If in doubt about any decision, wait 20 minutes & the correct action should become clear. If not, it is probably safe to wait another 20!

My fathers' advice when coming into a harbour and on observing persons standing idly by,waiting and watching for you to make a C@%kup; was to AIM the 50 ton boat towards the Shineiest boat moored up.People would scurry out to protect their boat and exchange pleasantries!!!:D:D:D

A self-serving, but canny instructor told me:

"Never listen to those who know how to do, cos they don't know why they know how to do, only listen to those who know how to tell you how to do, even if they don't know how to do."

Now go back and read it again...
