Besenzoni pasarelle spare parts rip off?

I take back my previous comment. I have now seen a Besenzoni ram with more than surface corrosion. Definatly send pics to Besenzoni and see what response you get. They may give you a new one free or at cost.

Mike, is the tender winch standard, or has someone added it later. The retaining bracket looks a bit of an afterthought, although the rest of it looks like it's supposed to be there? Assuming it's original, then as jfm says Besenzoni have clearly fitted a mild steel cylinder and sold it as an all SS passarelle, which is either a major bollox up on their part, or outright dishonesty. Even if it's many years old i'd still expect them to want to keep this very quiet, so you may well get them to give you a new ram, or as a minimum to supply one at cost.
Pretty sure it's standard Nick. Ferretti in particular like to order them with a string to lift the tender, rather than use the up/down movement of the arm to lift it (like yours, fe). Good idea to complain to Bes and get a deal

Also, the hydraulic piping looks ok to me. It's only the cylinder that is ferrous oxided

I'm amazed you're surprised though. It must have been heading in that "sweep me up" direction for the last several years mike. Do the staff not clean under the passerelle? You'll have to withhold their bonuses.
No, I noticed a few flakes of paint under the pasarelle on a regular basis but that cylinder is enclosed by a cover (see pic in my first post) so I guess most of the flaked off paint and rusted bits just collected in the cover. I never imagined that the cylinder was so badly corroded. The amazing thing was that it continued to operate without any apparent deterioration in performance or any oil leaks

Yup its a standard Besenzoni model with a winch and also with about 45deg either side slewing movement. I've only ever seen it on mid size Ferrettis. Actually its a good piece of kit (except for this ram of course). The slewing movement allows you to move the pasarelle away from obstructions on the quay and I prefer to lift the tender with the winch because it's lifted vertically and you can walk under the pasarelle to handle the tender
I've sent the pics to Timage for comment. I think the chances of getting any consideration from Besenzoni are nil but you never know. One of my engineers has seen the pics and he's on his way out to Italy tomorrow with the idea of removing the cylinder, bringing it back to the UK either for refurbishment or duplicating. Yup the piping looks fine

Just as an update, I got the ram back to the UK and had it repaired by a local hydraulic cylinder company at a cost of £375. They fitted a new barrel and painted it. Total cost to me of sending an engineer out to remove it from the pasarelle, ship it back to the UK, repair it and ship it back again around £700 which is a whole load cheaper than the local Italian rip off Besenzoni agent wanted to charge me. Mike, not wanting to teach you how to suck eggs....We (company I work for) do a lot of work in the subsea, backdeck and Oil and gas sectors...could I suggest you get a decent spec'd paint coating on the new cyl body (if not stainless) or you might end up doing all this again in a few years!
Be happy to arrange the coatings for you with an extremely quick turnaround.(very cheap too)...oh and I'm certainly not touting for work just an offer of help.

Rob.

If it was wroking at end of last season I'd just tell them "thanks but no thanks, and tellem not to touch the passerelle, and you'll deal with it next winter." That entire passerelle is about €9k retail, so the parts prices are daft. Under the white paint it is mostly st/steel and the service life is way way longer than this information suggests

+1 Oops, must read whole thread in future :o

Rob thanks and you're absolutely right. The ram is already on its way back to Italy and I had already instructed the marina to put a protective coating on it before refitting it. What would you recommend? Its definitely mild steel

Yup ram should be in Italy on Monday but as I say, if you can recommend a paint, then I would be grateful

Mike,

Systems we use via our coatings contractor are two possibly three coat systems that are used within that sort of trade only....had it not have gone to Italy I could have had it done alongside some extremely large subsea oil pipe connectors that we are presently having coated before being shipped to Angola!!

What I will do though is have a chat to the main man there on Monday and get his suggestions for an over the counter remedy.

Rob.

Considering that the cylinder is hidden, and that it's practically impossible to touch it accidentally, you could as well use the cheapest and more effective protection method on earth: waterproof grease.
Have you ever been in the e/r of a 20 years old fishing boat? You can call it dirty if you wish, but chances are that you'll find much less rust than in a sparkling e/r of a 2 years old pleasure boat.
